Hi there,

I was wondering what were some of the battle tactics that you have used in the past in other Battletech/Mechwarrior games and that you plan on using in MechWarrior Online?

Some tactics I applied in the past were jumping into other mechs' back (reversing during the jump) to fire at their less armour protected back after landing, circling my enemy at great speed and firing with a swivelled torso sideways in a one on one duel, trying to stand at higher ground and facing the foe with long-range weapons on a territory that provides little to no protection for advancing enemy units, using partial building or tree coverage to dodge enemy missiles and long range weapons and fortifying in water to allow for quicker cooling of my mech that was likely to overheat quickly.

Some additional strategies that I would like to use, if the game desgin allows it, are luring enemies into quagmires or quicksand, launching a jump attack on (the heads and shoulders of) enemy mechs, hiding under water in ducked/kneeling mech position and emerging undetected in the back of passing enemy troops, and digging oneself in or carrying out a mech shutdown in a dense forest with appropriate camouflage painting to avoid detection by enemy armed forces from land and air.

(MW3)
heres one of my favorites, jousting, ~ run strait towards your opponent then, alpha strike them, then turn your torso 90 degree to either side so that you center is guarded, now you collide/dfa.

Another variation shield arming: Alphastrike then rotate to block with your arm until your weapons recycle.

Double Tap: Run straight towards your opponent, alpha strike them, run past them, Bank hard left or right and torso twist, hit them again just as they face you.

(MW4)
Not a tactic / per say. "makes you suck in the long run if you rely to much on it"

RattleMaster: Fire some autocannons in premeasured intervals and never take our fingers off the buttons. Autocannons cause aim disrupting knock. 4 ac 10s fired 1 second apart in "old not mektek" mechwarrior 4 days allowed for a never ending shake down to the enemy mech. Thus they could never fire back.

The same could be done with 4 LRM 5 launchers.

The thing to remember is that one on one duelling in this game is going to be relatively rare. You have to think in terms of combined arms tactics, with every member fo the lance contributing somethign to the effort.

Go out alone ahead of your lance and a good, well trained unit will rip you to pieces.

Im in favor of tactic theory, as I didn't get into the MP scene of earlier mechwarrior games.

Long Tom is Looooooooooong:
Self explanatory. Get an Assault mech and arm it with 2-3 Long Toms and heat sinks, just enough so that it brings it close to shut down but not so hot it causes a melt down or ammo explosion. Scout and fire away. Stand in water for added effectiveness.

Recon Sniper:
Medium Mech with a Gauss Rifle + 1-2 close combat weapons(I would pick Flamers and Machinegun)
Plays like a scout in staying hidden and spotting but has the potential to take out or at least cripple (Read leg) a vulerable mech.

Juggernaught:
Assuming we get melee weapons this will be fun. For Assault Mechs only. Max out the engine, and continuously charge the enemy, You want to max out your tonnage for this to be most effective (in theory).

In mech 4 capture the flag I would use a fast light mech armed only with the narc, then shoot the defender in the face to distract them.

I've found that a lot of the players I've played with/against on the tabletop tend to send their light 'mechs in first because they're faster. I've found that it's often more profitable to have them hang back, waiting for the enemy to close with my heavier units that (often can) dish out more firepower at range. Once the enemy is close, I send the lights out to quickly get behind them.

This is the kind of 'combined-arms' lance tactics I want to employ in MWO.

Wait 'til someone's engaged with somebody else, come up behind 'em at full speed, punch several racks of SRMs into their rear armor, then run.

My favorite tactic has always been to Kill the other guy before he Kills me. Doesn't always work out, but the 98% of times it does, I survive. :)

My favorite tactic is to brawl with a PPC and Gauss. It works really well! Range profiles mean nothing :)

In MW4 I like to flank and distract players from the main line of attack, usually got myslef killed quickly, but it often does distract them, if they're in avdvantageous ground that can be useful.

Effectively the teams that are going to do well will have very effective Lances. 4 mechs working together in 2 man sections, ie lead/wingman will do very very well. Since it looks like radar it will not be omnidirectional we are all going to have to watch each others back, and those teams that do that well will win more than not.

my favorite method has always been shoot as soon as its in range and then when it gets close aim for whatever you already hurt by accident.

Hit and run.

I love light Battlemechs. Dodging and Juking are effective ways not to die, couple that with a distraction made by said mech, and Mr. Heavy hidden behind a building has a clear shot at whatever rear-armor or critical he likes.

In MW4 id play a speedy shadow cat with one powerful weapon an AC I think it was, plus SRMs and two flamers, id use passive sensors run out and hide someplace and wait for the enemy to get close then rush a big slow mech run circles around it, flaming it so it overheats as I focus fire my high damage weapon on the torso :-) Ahhh fun times...and yeah I'd like to try that in MWO

The really interesting stuff should happen when you talk about tactics at the lance/company level. This is a team game, 8v8 or whatever, so the focus of the game should be at the team level. If the game lends itself to competitive games among organised units, then it will have been a success. If it doesn't and we end up with little more than a bunch of death match servers with no real organised play, then that isn't quite so appealing.
