Pilots (humans) operate mechs
They can leave mechs
They can enter mechs
They are attached to a mech through control interfaces (joysticks and buttons) as well as a neurohelmet
The helmet can be taken off
The controls can be turned off
In MWO pilots can not leave mechs (yet)

Sarna really is the go to place for BT/MW information. If you have any questions, Sarna usually has the answer.

Also, Mechs can be "secured" by neurohelmets. If they don't recognize you as the owner of the Mech, the helmet can fry your brain. This is why you never see "THE CLUB" on a Mech's control sticks.

The controls for a mech are more or less like a fighter plane today but with the addition of a helmet that can do rudimentary thought detection (mostly sense of balance)

Also, a Code Number or Phrase ist used to secure a Mech.
If you want to Read a few BattleTech Books, i would recommend the Blood of Kerensky Triology from the Author Michael A. Stackpole.
It also fits the Timeframe in wich MWO is set.
