From what has been posted thus far I can see a green Atlas pilot being cut to ribbons by a few(even two) green light/medium pilots if their roles on the battlefield are complimentary; that is to say that the Commando just released 'lights up' the Atlas from cover or while keeping behind him and a Command Mech or Catapult miles away and out of sight rains hell on the Atlas.

The arms race will be more akin to:
"C.O. Mech can you call airstrikes?"
"Yes"
"Awesome, scout mechs we need you to find their Heavy Hitters before we commit and the C.O. can soften them up"

So, the arms race is about who can do what. I forsee a very tactically demanding game and quite alot of 'Leeroy' moments causing rage-quits. My greatest hope is that the match-maker incorporates an element of battlefield redundency; that is to say that there are multiple mechs capable of performing required roles in each battle. A scoute that wants to be Duke Nukem(or is drunk) could easily ruin an entire battle if he's the only scout available.

The Devs have said that you get to start in one of the four types of mechs but that being in an assault is not an instant win, from what I've heard it sounds more like an instant lose. As to leveling up, you level up your pilot and your mech, rather like selecting perks in other games, not trying to get in an Atlas as soon as possible.

An assault without support is easy prey for a few medium mechs or even one medium mech depending on weaponry. As we were shown in the 2009 trailer, that Warhammer nearly took down the Atlas, he had little room to move though, resulting in the Atlas's ability to nail him with that last hail mary of LRMs.

The Devs have already said that the role you choose is not static, they are jusr Scout, Defender, Assault, and Commander Skills in different trees you can mix and match for how you want to play. Its not a "Choose this role FOREVER" type of game.

I never said it was. I just said that at the start when you make your character you would be given a choice on the type of mechs that fit your initial role.

I am sory i did not make myself clear

I did not mean to imply that this is in any way limiting your choices. just giving an example. If you chose another roll say command you get differing options to start with.
This is to allow for ease of start in the game for new people. if you want to start in a chassis opted for attack/defense IE the atlas go for it just chose attack/defense at the start instead of scout.
all three skills can be leveled in any mech. This has ben said by the devs as you pointed out and i agree.

This should be clearly stated somewhere at the start of the Character Creation Screen. that You are not held to the roles listed and the mechs in them. They are a guide for the new player and not the end all be all. All the mechs can be scouts, assault/defenders, command mechs.
