Since the MW2 box art was featured, might as well:

Also, anyone who watched the Battletech cartoon would recall that the 3 main adversaries piloted a Summoner, Mad Dog and Timber Wolf. So becasue of the TV show, MW2 and MW3, these 3 mechs to me are very iconic and symbolic of the clans in the BT universe.

Since I mentioned the TV show, on the IS side, that's maybe why I personally love seeing the Awesome, Mauler and Bushwacker.

Also, don't forget Adam's Axeman! Awesome mech, though I don't remember seeing him used his Axe in the show, and just re-watched the series. Great show non-the-less with a great final battle.Very epic!

If you really like to know about the "Mad Cat"

The Mad Cat is called the Timber Wolf among the the Clans, it was designed by Clan Wolf to replace the aging Woodsman.

It first shows up in the first novel of the Blood of Kerensky Trilogy, here's a snippet of text:

You are correct, this is the first written account of a clan mech. Michale A stackpool is one of my favorite authors. His books just got better and better.

Also apart from being used on the cover of several video games it's also on the cover of the origional battletech compendium. The book describing the full rules of the tabletop game. http://www.sarna.net...Tech_Compendium

I'm sure I read somewhere that it was also usually a 'Mech only given to the best of the best due to its grace on the battlefield and utter deadlyness with an experienced pilot..... and that it was damn expensive to outfit, repair and maintain all that shiney clan tech!

But maybe thats just how I want it to be :)

Funny thing about the Mad Cat, is for me it is the iconic point at which Battletech started to go cheesy. I started with the 3025 book - the Rifleman, the Marauder, the Warhammer, the Archer - and all of their inherent weaknesses. Then in comes "clan" technology, which takes everything and makes it lighter, longer range, less heat and more damage; all but eliminating the problems that were inherent in the original mechs. Clan technology just about ruined it for me.

Incidentally, the Mad Cat was also one of the leading causes of the court cases that ultimately lead to BT's loss of what are today the Unseen... :D

Because when people in the inner sphere first saw it the thought it looked like a blend of a Marauder and a Catapult, which have name designations of MAD and CAT, respectively.

Actually, the Catapult's designations are "CPLT-xx", not "CAT-xx". :)
So, arguably the "Mad Cat" name came more from the Catapult's name in addition to the Marauder's designation ("MAD-xx").

It helps that the madcat was the (only) mech option in the original Mechwarrior video game. I think the other appeal is that it looks distinct. Most other mechs have a more humanoid look, such as as the Atlas, or a humanoid look with a weapon platform (Rifleman or Warhammer) The Madcat is pretty unique in its appearance and looks a lot less like the transformers and gobots that were the other big robots that I remember.

The Madcat also was featured a lot in Mechwarrior and Mechcommander intro videos.
Mechcommander was the first battletech game i played and i still consider the intro vid to be one of the best in computergame history.

Wow that took me back. Also Im assuming its just popular since its always featured on covers/videos. Dont know why the devs chose it to be featured though xD

The first Mechwarrior game came out in 1989 and took place in the year 3025 or some time around then, just after the 3rd sucession war. The clans haden't invaded yet. The playeable mechs where Locust, Jenner, Pheoxhawk, Shadowhawk, Rifleman, Maurder, Warhammer and Battlemaster. I think your referring to the SNES game mechwarrior 3050 whch was a top down action game that came out in 1995. I played the first game on my 386, it was awesome.

Actually, it is because when (according to lore) Phellan Kell first targeted the Mad Cat, his IFF kept flickering between MAD (Maruader) and CAT (Catapult) because it wasn't in any inner sphere records, as this was the first sighting of it. Hence the name, MAD-CAT

I met Mad Cat/Dire Wolf in a Sega Battletech-themed game. It was one and only protagonist Mech in the whole game with nine different weapons to choose (Machine Gun/Laser/Autocannon, PPC/Gauss Rifle/Arrow VI, Inferno/Missile/Thunder mine).

According to canon (Battletech/Mechwarrior history, if you like), the Mad Cat (clan designation Timber Wolf) gets its name from two well-known and highly successful IS battlemechs. The Marauder (MAD) and Catapult (CAT). According to some of the novels, when the Mad Cat was first identified on the field, pilots' computers could not decide what to name the new 'mech. They kept switching between the Catapult and Marauder and so the target had alternating designations of MAD-CAT-MAD-CAT... It has the arms and gun pods similar to a Marauder, is the same mass as a Marauder, and couples this with massive missile pods similar to a Catapult.

I couldn't tell ya whether the above is why it is so famous, but I think that has something to do with it. Moreover, when the Clans invaded the Inner Sphere, the Mad Cat was one of the first Clan 'mechs encountered along with the Daishi (clan designation Dire Wolf) and Loki (clan designation Hellbringer). And at that time few IS pilots, if any, could face it and emerge victorious. The likes of this 'mech took the IS by surprise at the dawn of the Clan Invasion. Its firepower rivals that of a 3025 AS7-D Atlas; if not outweighs it by a little.
