I am shocked this 'mech isn't winning by a mile. We need a heavy energy boat kind of design in MWO badly, and this fits the bill (to contrast with the ballistic and missile heavy ones we have), where as the Merlin largely feels redundent - it's not much different than Grand Dragon, really.
I think it's name recognition. The Lancelot has far and away the most firepower and mobility, with great staying power - it's a great example of a high-tier 'mech in a fairly light, niche package. It also fills the role of a high speed raider / glass cannon, another thing we don't have in MWO yet - there needs to be at least one "fast with lots of guns" heavy choice to contrast with the generally slower designs.
Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the other choices; none of them make me groan and some of them I've even fond of (Such as the Quickdraw), but as far as what we need in MWO the Lancelot is hands down the best option.
Logn story short: In the name of being diverse, ask yourself one question: What can a Merlin do that a Grand Dragon cannot?

Lancelot - Energy boat, slightly better armored, but slower (the version we will start wtih is likely 64kph top speed). A unique mech (so far), and possibly as close to a Rifleman as we will ever see. And there is a 3050 variant out there with 2 x AC/5 + PPC for a mini Maurader.
Merlin - Decent armor, moderate speed plus jump jets. The mech does bring 3, as of yet unseen, weapons systems: PPC, Machine Gun, and Flamer. Unfortunately those weapons place the Merlin in an almost identical role as the Dragon with a similar range and damage profile.
Quickdraw - This is one of those mechs that I just don't like. I can't think of a good thing to say about it.
and my vote goes to:
Lancelot This mech brings a lot of firepower and a fresh design to the table.

JUST SAYIN'!
But from that list, Champion. We lack weird looking mechs, and a heavy between 64 and 96 kph. And I want the ERPPC + Gauss variant. Man, 3049 lacks chickenwalkers severly, god bless the Trashborns.

I mean, going by Battletech stats alone, I'd rather go for the Merlin (it's more or less a heavier version of the Vindicator - a tried and true design), but this game seems to be taking rear-firing weapons and putting them forward facing. Quickdraws are garbage in the tabletop because half of their weapons are rear-facing, but MW2 Mercs and tabletop has shown me that the difference between a QKD with two forward firing medium lasers and four forward firing mediums is huge, going from a 60-ton paperweight to a beast of a machine.
The Champion, while it looks cool, has not treated me well in the tabletop or computer games. I have little love for it. It's pretty much the 60-ton version of the Sentinel - another paperweight of a 'mech.
The Lancelot... It would make a decent laserboat to replace the Black Knight, but it doesn't really do much for me.

The Merlin looks the most fun to drive though so I'll vote for it.
