Looking at the skills for different mech types. It seems only some will have zoom. But does that mean there will be a basic zoom for all mechs and then better ones for the smaller mechs, or will i have to cope without zoom if im driving an assault mech?

I'm hoping for a standard optical zoom on all chassis, but the ability to purchase enhanced optics on select ones that support it.

I agree, what I hope for as well. Put 4 points in to zoom, your zoom is that much better then STD

It would be kind of silly to only have good zoom on small mechs, considering how most of the powerful guns are also long ranged, enhanced optics is probably a skill that you can buy a module for, it would be hard to imagine no zoom if you mount PPCs or Gauss rifles.

I agree, i thought it would be odd but i thought it might be a way of stopping jump sniping and creating balance between mech sizes.

not sure how the original trailer ties into the current game, but in the original trailer you can see in the warhammer hud that he took 4 seconds each time to gain a lock and even then all of his weapons did not hit. When he fired without lock most of his weapons missed. Meaning if I am jump sniping, I might get a shot or two off but none with weapons lock and probably none that actually get my torso reticle lined up as well, having to aim roughly with my arms and hoping I hit.

this is my wild arse guess anyway based on watching the original trailer and pausing and watching the hud and tracking the time and watching where each shot went, etc

As explained elsewhere the list of unlockable Pilot Skills (and their accompanying Modules) is organized into different tiers solely for the purposes of a Skill Tree and have nothing to do with what you'll be able to do with which Mechs. Zoom/Optics skills may be in the "Scout" category but the skill/module can be used with any Mech. It simply falls under "Scout" category so you advance in a linear tree unlocking various other "Scout" skills. So you'll be able to fit out a sniper of any size of Mech and give it a zoom and it'll be awesome. Don't worry about it.
