Firaxis has finally released the first gameplay footage of their upcoming title XCOM: Enemy Unknown not to be confused with 2K Marin's upcoming title, XCOM. For those of you who are new to the series, Firaxis's XCOM is based off of the classic 1994 UFO: Enemy Unknown (Original/European Title) AKA X-COM: UFO Defense (North America) and XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PlayStation). Confused yet? Good you should be this series has had a long and troubled history, but there is no reason to bug you with that. Anyways XCOM: EU was announced quite a while ago, they gave out lots of pretty pictures and some information but the big picture was still void until now. With the release of this video and some interviews, its all starting to come together and to tell you the truth as a hardcore fan of the series it is looking like the spiritual successor that we've been praying for the past 18 years.

Yeah, it was Very Hard. and there was a reason for it. Apparently there was a bug in the software that set the difficulty to the highest level no matter what level you chose at the start. Supposedly Firaxis is doing a bit of a shout out to that problem by calling the most difficult setting "Classic"

It was actually the other way around, no matter what difficulty you set it to after the first mission it would revert back to beginner.

My favourite game ever, slightly edging out Mw2 Mercs.

Anyways, I'm liking what I see.

Yes it is different in a lot of ways but still interesting. In any case, if you really want a more traditional remake of X-Com, that would be Xenonauts.

I will probably buy this when it comes out. I loved XCOM UFO Defense. I still have a copy for the Playstation somewhere in the house. I have a PC copy also. Though I can not get it to play on our new macine. :)

I'm looking forward to this. One of the first games I ever played. I only had the demo of it, but loved it nonetheless. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Hopefully it does the original justice, and brings it into a modern age [how many times has that been said for EVERYTHING.]

I'm excited...
I love the old XCOM games. The second game, "Terror from the deep", was my fav. XCOM part. I hope we see the classic foes like Mutons, Snakemen, Floater, Sektoids etc.

Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep were both great games.

Though I have to say that while TftD had some realy good changes the thing I hated the most was the terror aussault on civilian ships.
Could easily take half an hour to find that last damn alien in one of the gazillion rooms there (close second was mind control + the launcher with the ability to use waypoints, quite an "I win" combo)...

Spent countless hours on both and enjoyed them alot.

If you have a love for everything X-Com then you should definitely check out Xenonauts and support the devs by contributing to the KICKSTARTER. The goal of $60,000 has already been reached and surpassed, we are at $80,000 now and climbing. All additional money that goes into the project now will add more features into the game.

Spoiler

I'm the dev for X@COM, and thanks a million for your post Tanki! But not for the reason you might imagine :D

I was just recently checking out links to my game, and noticed that apparently someone came from this forum. Tracked it back only to discover... oh my god, this is another Mechwarrior game!

Been a huge Battletech fan ever since I played the boardgame (and read all the fiction) for years as a kid, and have played all the Battletech/MW videogames since, but I don't really have much time to spend searching around for games these days, and had no idea MWO was in the works. Always nice to find out about these things nearer to launch, too. Then I don't have long to wait :)

Hopefully I can get in on the beta! I'm totally buying that ELITE package.

Thanks again Tanki!

From what I read about the new X-Con a while back is that it will be as difficult as the 1st one.

 If anyone should be thanked it should be you. All the hard work you put into this project is outstanding and I can't wait to play the next installment. Rogue like is perfect for X-Com, its something I've always dreamt about and you are making it reality. So I really can't thank you enough, im glad my post lead you to something you like aswell it's the least I can do.

Dev of X@COM commenting on my post on a completely unrelated site, beta keys given out today... today is just awesome!

Wow, so my game's on your list not just for completion's sake, but you've actually played it, cool! Didn't really expect anyone here to know about it, much less have played it. It's in really early development as you know, and I believe the full game will eventually manage fulfill both our dreams (one of these days, anyway; it's just going to take some time...).

Speaking of dreams, I was more recently dreaming about creating a roguelike in the Battletech universe (mechs). I want it to be hex-based though, and don't have an engine ready for it right now, so I postponed the idea until who knows when. In the end I instead settled for making a quick roguelike a couple months back which I based on some of the concepts from Battletech (Cogmind, in my sig, which you may also know about if you know X@COM). It was a one-week project meant mostly for RL vets, so it's not quite as user-friendly as it could be, but it turned out pretty good, and I sorta got my Battletech fix.

One day I really should do a full-blown faithful Battletech RL, but for now I need to concentrate my forces on X@COM. Gotta take it one dream at a time, I guess...

Must be providence, since a week or so before I found this place I started re-reading all my old Battletech novels, haha...
