Are all lasers continuous-style lasers?

During the podcast, we heard that lasers tend to "melt" lines in armor. This indicates that damage is not all applied at once, but rather over a period of time. If this is the case, this is likely to discourage energy boats from being king of the hill.

How do you feel about this?

from what i've read of the books, the lasers arn't continuos but they to have a slight duration. from what i've seen in other MW games, it varies from .25 to 1 second duration.

Yeah, that's why I said continuous-style. It's not entirely continuous, but there is a notable duration. If Daeron seemed to think it'd be extremely difficult to deliver all the damage to a single location of any target that wasn't standing still, that seems to indicate a significant duration.

I'd prefer to see long duration lasers streaking across the battlefield in the dead of night.

I think it's something that will get balanced after a beta or month or so of play. Like you say it stops laser spam and adds more tactics to the game, Skilled players will still land a good deal of damage i'm sure. If the target is moving away/to you they still take it in the face which means you might get a lot of whining for nerfs from players that cant steer ;) Also we will have to wait to see how heat is dealt with really to see how effective laser alpha striking will be.

Every weapons system should be viable for different reasons and in different scenarios. While I am not a fan of stupid range instant-death laserboats, I don't want to see lasers so gimped they can't do anything. I hope they have cool mechanics and are reasonably effective but not so much that they become the premier choice for weapons.

There won't be pulse lasers. That's for sure.

I know there are some floating around thanks to star league tech - but they should be almost impossible to get and wildly expensive.

Off the top of my head, the Combine reintroduced some pulse lasers in 3037. So some should be available.

Pulse lasers have been back for a little while now thanks to the helm memory core.

Right. I know that. And said that. But as I stated... they should be really hard to get and expensive....

They could not be considered standard issue and would not be deployed en mass like we would see in MWO. Being expensive and difficult to unlock would emphasize that.

I actually like this, it will make the lasers act more like they did in MW3, where you can adjust your aim to another part of the opponent's body if you feel the desire to do so.

I like the idea of lasers requiring a short duration of focus to deliver the full effect, rather than being an instant-damage weapon. It's a trade-off for not really having to worry about a ballistic trajectory or having to lead a target.

As for pulse lasers, I liked the MW3 style, multiple beams firing but requiring a longer time on target - likely to hit something, but hard to get full damage output to a single area.

The big questions I'm still wondering about, is whether SRMs will have limited guidance, like in MW3, and whether PPCs will be treated like a bolt (essentially similar to a ballistic gauss slug in the physics model), or whether they will be a beam similar to the reboot trailer.

DoT lasers would be my preference. They get the advantage of hitscan, but have to track their target Vs Ballistics that have to lead, but are fire and forget.

Nope.. you run out of ammo.. I light you up with 3 PPCs in an Alpha strike you go boom... !

Thats

NOTE I like to think of PPCs as balls of lighting.. doing a "Cannon" type of damage.. otherwise they would call it a Particle Projector Laser.. or something like that. But I digress..
