So I was thinking about what I would be willing to really buy with actual money from MWO and that got me onto LoL, a f2p game I have spent more money than I really should have on and quickly realized that what I spent most of it on was champions, not really even the champions but access to them. So I was wondering, once this game gets really going and we see some new mechs every so often (I hope) what if certain mechs which would be available soon could be bought as prototypes for real money, it would not really be much of an advantage but it sure would be badass if that new mech of yours has the serial number "1" on it.

I am also curious as to how people would feel about basically spending real money for effectively extinct mech designs like Star League era ones, again it would hopefully not be gamebreaking or anything but being the only known Kyduo pilot in known space would be a fun feeling and I would probably spend like $15-20 on a Hammerhands.

as long as they arent more powerful that other available mechs i am fine with money for anything. i would easily spend 100 bux day one for hula girls and a giant cowboy hat for my mech. as long as the cowboy hat and hula girl dont effect combat. if its pay to win at all, i likely wont play.

Putting a mech out that isn't available to a lot of people is going to be a waste of resources. You're looking at skins as prestige items most likely. Like you get enough LP to join a famous unit and unlock the unit's livery for your mechs.

I'd pay for a Striker - basically a Zeus with an AC/5 instead of LRM 15.

There are plenty of obscure Star League era 'Mechs that I'd pay to use, like the Lynx or Mercury. Problem is, Star League era 'Mechs are often more powerful than Succession Wars era 'Mechs simply due to technological decline, so simply by existing they'd alter the balance of gameplay. For instance, the Lynx uses Jump Jets, Double Heatsinks, an ER PPC, an XL Engine, and so on and so forth; it wasn't produced again until 3056, and until that point the only time you'd see Inner Sphere 'Mechs that advanced would be stuff from ComStar's stock.

There's also, of course, the decision of whether or not to model that particular 'Mech, since there are so many to choose from and creating a model and then balancing it takes time. So, as much as I'd like thus stuff, it's probably not going to happen outside of a few select cases.

Well as for balance we are starting to see the real resurgance of SL era tech as even came up in one of the front page updates recently and the clans are only a short time period away and at that point balance is about to get turned on it's head.

The main problem is naturally what you and Ruleslawyer pointed out that making each mech could take considerable man hours to make and if there is not much interest it may be a bit of a loss though there are certainly a few out there that people with undoubtedly pay for I think.
