I tend to use the heavy assault Mechs typified by the Atlas and Awesome Class. For me these are really what Mechwarrior is all about; slugging it out at extreme range like the Battleships of WW1. The snag is when you get an ultra light unit like a Jenner that closes to contact too quickly to get a lock on and then slowly but surely takes you out.
Solution 1; Most modern warships employ Close In Weapon Systems CIWS like the Vulcan Phalanx to take out fast incomming missiles and aircraft. This could be an option for Mechwarrior, maybe with a limitation on the amount of rounds each Atlas could carry; by doing this it would give the assault units a chance.
Solution 2; A bit more radical, but it would look great. The Atlas / Awesome would be fitted with ejectable proximity grenades or mines. On getting caught in the ring of death, the counter measure CIWS system is activated, deploying the grenades / mines outside of the operating area of the attacking light unit. They automatically detonate causing significant damage to the light units legs. The trade off is that the Atlas / Awesome would also take some damage, however its a much stronger unit to start with.

Solution one already exists within the lore, known as an A.M.S, or Anti-Missile System. Essentially a computer-controlled rapid-firing gun that attempts to shoot down enemy missiles. More likely than not, it's already been implemented as it's quite commonly seen on 'Mechs. It has the problem that it can run out of ammunition, however.
Solution two seems a bit overpowered, since it gives the lighter harassers no way to escape or counterattack an assault 'Mech. It would look cool, but I don't like the idea of an assault being able to repel any kind of attacker with impunity.
