Just to confuse things even more...
The Cauldron Born is often called the Cauldron Born even by clan warriors. The name stuck over Ebon Jaguar for some reason, probably superstition about their annihilation.

I posted this here because TT fans tend to be the ones who have been the BT/MW fans for the longest time.
I didn't know that the Madcat was also called the Timberwolf until a couple years ago when i was reading a BT book where Aiden Pryde was in a new mech and the book called it a Timberwolf but the picture in the book was a picture of a Madcat. I hollered at my clan mates at the time(when i was competing in MWL) and that's when it was explained to me for the first time that Madcat/Timberwolf are two different names for the same Mech.
Now that i understand that Timberwolf is the original name, where did the name Madcat come from and why did the MW4 gaming series didn't call the mech by it's real name?

Okay, basically, when Inner Sphere forces first encountered this thing, their computers switched between designating it as a Marauder, whose model name is MAD, and the Catapult, whose model name is CAT, so they just decided to name it Mad Cat. See?
Also, the Mad Cat looks like a combo between the Marauder and the Catapult. This may have influenced the Inner Sphere's name for it as well.
See? Arms of a Marauder, torso/legs of a Catapult!
EDIT: If you're instead wondering why the IS is not calling the Mad Cat the Timber Wolf, it's because there has really been no contact between the Inner Sphere and the Clans. At least, none that have mentioned the names of the clans' mechs. So the Inner Sphere does not know anything about what the Clan mechs are actually called.

The Catapult's actual model abbreviation is CPLT - ergo it should be a MadCplt. It could of been MarCat or Catarauder.
It's called MadCat because it sounds cool. It really is that simple.
