I agree that there definitely needs to be some sort of structure. The MW2s were a bit lacking in that department. I should not be able to mount LRMs (or pretty much most weapons systems) in the Mech's legs.

On another note, I hope they have a killer sound team, I don't know about you all, but I play Mechcommander music when I want to get in an adventurous mood. My heart still beats a little harder when the battle music plays. Sounds can make playing a game irritating or delightful. (And not just music, but that is the most striking example I can think of right now.)

Ya know I get tired of seeing this. For one Mechassault was made on the Xbox. A system that is available to the masses. It has 8 buttons not counting joystick clicks and the d-pad. How in the world do people get mad when it is "nothing like my mechwarrior that I know". There is no possible way for them to have made a similar Mechwarrior title from the PC on the xbox, unless they made you buy a ridiculous controller set up a la Steel Battalion. Most console gamers wouldn't have forked the cash to buy it. As a game goes the Mechassault games were pretty good.
Secondly, the Dark Age series novels are as good as any before them. Heck Stackpole even wrote some of 'em.
I love Mechwarrior just as much as the next person, but some of you hold on to that older stuff like a toddler does to a security blanket, to worried to let go and experience something new.
I like where you're coming from. Though I have to go with the masses in regards to the whole Jihad and Dark Age stuff. I'm someone who knows the backstory but I'm not heavily invested in the lore yet I still found the whole concept of Jihad/Dark Age to be a wild departure from BT/MW that was hard to digest.

Agreed. It was a departure from the classic story line which I dislike. I think part of my issue with the Jihad and Dark Age is that Jihad seemed to come out close 9:11 when rl Jihad was all over the media. It seemed convenient and frankly stupid like they just pulled it right off the front page. Also, the subsequent knights of the inner sphere thing seems to just further dilute the rich BT history with a storyline from D&D or something.

Let's be fair. MechAssault could have been a lot better and used the same button count. The whole jacking into mechs thing was not at all influenced by the small number of controls. I gave the game an honest try, and found it lacking. I gave the sequel an honest try, and found it lacking.
Also, the first few Dark Age novels weren't the best examples of writing in this setting. True, later novels became much better and worthy reads in their own right, but those first few novels were terrible. It's not uncommon for people to form opinions based on a few bad eggs, especially when those bad eggs are the first you eat.
When I tried out MechAssault, I was absolutely livid at the game. However, it wasn't until I tried on the multiplayer that I started to appreciate the game for its own merits. It didn't need to be a Mech game, but the gameplay was solid, and speaking through my preferences, I would rather have a slightly watered down sim with a million people online, than an end-all-be-all simulator that nobody plays. For some context, I do own Steel Battalion.
It may be that I got into the universe with Mechwarrior 3 and Mechcommander, but up to about half way through the Dark Age, I really like the direction the series was going, both in terms of narrative and aesthetic. Battletech has so many elements of feudal society in it, and looking back at the literal translation of that during the '80s seems gratuitous.

Mutliplayer was fun in the first game to jump in and play, but it got old eventually with its simplicity. Single player was where I had my complaints

Well...true...I guess I should clarify that the wait is over in the sense that the game is actually going to happen (knocks on wood), not just random online rumors. I refused to believe until there was a tentative release date and gameplay footage. I can wait for a release date, but the wait is over for this to actually happen (knocks on wood again, throws salt over shoulder, spins around three times, kicks a cat)

I agree. it was too radical a departure. the 'realism' of 31st century combat done by FASA was always one of the things that attracted me about btech, and that went out the window with jihad/dark age.
I don;t care who you are and what level of technology/manufacturing you have, but if you have any experience with the armed forces and the logistics involved you will know that warfare and logistics on the scale done by WOB in the jihad is simply impossible. campaigns need planning and intelligence, replacement troops aren't trained overnight heck RECRUITMENT is an issue, ammunition and replacement mechs don't appear by magic. most importantly, food doesnt grow by itself! operations need time to plan, Heck, the logistics of even ONE regiment with accompanying aerospace/space elements attacking a world is a nightmare, let alone repacking and leaving for another world. your troops may be the hardest bada** fanatics in the IS, but everyone needs downtime. military training, let alone real war, is mentally and physically exhausting. no one is going to fight a war for years on end and remain at peak effeciency.
and just how did the wobbies get elite units (shadow divisions) so fast? you may have the best technology and fast reflexes, but even so that doesn't make you 'elite'. a unit with battle hardened experience will still triumph. sure you might take a few more of them down, but simply not happening, unless shadow divisions were secretly out waging wars against each other to get combat expereince.
when people started to throw around WMDs and somehow replacements were springing up faster than you can say babies born, I was pretty much pissed off.
the other thing that really pissed me off was the whole 'devlin stone' coalition thing. you don;t put aside hundreds of years of political conflict, backroom deals, suspicion, (plus the clan wars) , everyone shakes hands nicely and goes to kill the wobbies. not in the information confused state of the jihad era, with the whole HPG blackout and all. simply not done. you can argue they did it to kill clan smoke jag, but that was in much different circumstances and in a different era.
as for dark age, the less said the better.
I'll admit, things have improved ( I'm really enjoying the historicals that have been published-operation klondlike, the reunification war, also the wars of reaving). but the mistake was to try and win over new fans with a new universe by trying to 'dumb down' the universe. old fans saw through it too simply.
