Metagame is wearing me down a little - I feel for one of the new players complaining about lack of actual variance in matches..

Fast: Commandos/Ravens
Close Range: SRM boats
Mid-Range: UAC5/PPC/LL/ML boats
Long Range: Gauss/LRM boats.

I wish the more balanced loadouts available didn't simply feel like +1 Kill for the other team.

I'd like to see the C1 Catapults, HJ Hunchbacks and other similar style setups have a place in the game.

I wish they were less worse.

On topic though, builds that aren't built around min/maxing aren't always terrible. I've seen people tear up while piloting a Catapult with LL, ML and SRMs or a Hunch with ML and SRMs. Trial mechs, on the other hand, yeah. They're not great.

The 4SP is a crazy user-friendly mech. I'd hazard to say that it is the best stock variant in the game - but it is also one of the most specialized.
