Where did you get this idea? I don't see why people are talking in terms of MMOs. It makes a lot more sense that this game would work in a mission based setting and/or through popular match types, and simply sortie. Yes, you have a pilot level that is independent of your mech, but this isn't much different from LoL in regards to "summoner" levels.

The way I was reading into it, it sounds like it's going to be an online campaign with the battles for territory taking place in normal sorties of Conquest and Versus. I guess people are seeing the "Online" and assuming that it's going to be standard MMO fare.

Silent and Aegis Kleais definitely got it on this one. I would like to add though that the phrase "persistent online world" probably had something to do with it, as most people think of a standard MMO world like World of Warcraft when they hear that it's going to be "persistent"; whereas I believe that in the case of MWO they mean that your actions to conquer or defend a world have a permanent effect on the sovereignty of that world, like the global conquest portion of World of Tanks or the fights for dominion in the systems of Eve.

oh goodness if this is nothing like the 'standard' MMOs I would be a happy camper. As long as conquest of the Inner Sphere is possible, with capturable factories and planets, I will be thrilled.

Clearly people don't understand what a persistent online world is, and also they probably never heard of Chrome Hounds.

MMO is just a catchall acronym for any game that you can play with a whole bunch of people online. It doesn't automatically refer to a WoW-like game unless you want it to. The rest is just a battle of semantics.

I had to Quote this for truth because people got their panties in a wad... This is a MMO. As in "Massive Multi-player Online" where WoW is a MMORPG. This will however be a tactical game instead of focused on the RPG element. *** I miss my Chrome Hounds...

I think that is more the issue though when people say MMO they do not think the term, they think MMORPG and WoW.

OK, so let's just invent a new phrase, right?

MMOTWS = Massive Multiplayer Online Tactical Warfare Simulation

If we don't, someone else surely will, especially once MWO takes off.

I made a thread on wanting it to be an MMO game. I'm not sure why anyone would confuse this game with one. It's just an instanced game from the descriptions. Having come from games like Planetside with giant persistent worlds where you join in a huge 133v133v133 ongoing fight you Immediately see the difference. I hope the mechwarrior games can get to that level sometime, but for now it looks like a more polished multiiplayer only game with faked persistence to work with instanced gameplay.

Alright, alright, I will admit I walked right into that saying MMO instead of MMORPG, but specifically I was referring to the people who were actually talking as if it were to be an MMORPG. There is a lot of it if you are reading around in the forums.

I'm editing the title as to avoid confusion of the topic.

Mmmhh lets see, if we get thousands of players fighting on a Inner Sphere map and changing planet controls on a daily basis to paint the map in other colours...and MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online-game...
Yeah i think this can be an MMO. If we do not get our IS map (MPBT3025 style) and have just a "quick match" button like World of tanks, then I change my opinion and it is no MMO.

But lets face it, if they give us no IS map to fight for changing territory, that would be the first big mistake along the road.

Eh, Global Agenda was an MMO. And one could say it was an RPG as well. But in the end, by design, (at least at launch) it was a glorified lobby where players waited for matches to queue up and that was it.

MechWarrior Online is likely to be something similar and may evolve some RPG elements after release as they try to make content more interesting.

EVE is another game where you don't get out of your ship (or didn't for years, now recent xpac allowed you too) but still had plenty of RPG game style elements and we very well might see that come into MechWarrior as well.

+1 this. Massively Multiplayer Online.

Doesn't mean its an RPG.

I'd love it became a MMORPG instead, though. :)

There's an actual name for the type of game MWO is and it's called a "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" or "MOBA" for short.

Whatever it ends up being, I'm just glad it's a new MechWarrior.
