Ok I have been trying to boot up the good old Mechwarrior 3 again because I miss it A LOT! However I'm in a pickle because I have a modern AMD gpu. It causes some well known glitches that makes the game unplayable. The only fix on the net is from mechwarrior3.org and it has been weeks since I signed up but they won't activate my account due to poor site management.

If ANYONE has the ATI/AMD fix for this game I would GREATLY appreciate it.

BTW I love this beta so far and it plays nicely on my Radeon HD6990M.

The problem seems familiar, including the one with their forums. I couldn't get it too run on my nVidea and intel PC either, so I hope you get a useful reply, and this little bump helps you.

Good luck man. I bet it has more to do with win 7 being 64-bit possibly...

I was able to play it on a win7x64 machine with a gtx470.

Although the screen does a flash/flicker thingy every 5 seconds or so it works. And it's playable, campain works, I'm now at the mission where one of lancemates says that without tag keith andrews is about as accurate as the mfb predicting clanner moves, that's pretty far in the campain.

might have to try out a few drivers and mess with the "scaling" setting/ single multiple display performance mode. not sure how much options there are in the catalyst control center.

also very important, run a frame limiter, I limited it on 35 fps with nvidia inspector, flickers less that way. forcing vsync might work too. If you dont limit the fps the physics go mad and vehicles start bouncing 100m in the air.

I've seen it work flawlessly on a netbook with windows xp too, some of them are so slow you dont even need a frame limiter. So if you have one of those try it on that.

Well, it actually works great in Windows 7 64-bit if you use the software renderer. Just install it off the cd and you can play. If you use the GPU renderer you'll get all sorts of colors.

I use the GPU renderer, the software renderer doesnt allow me to limit fps unfortunately, physics go mad without it.

and it's impossible to clock my cpu back so far it's slow enough to have low fps.

Anyone have any step-by-step instructions how to make it work? (Link, Post, whatever)

All I did was install it, turn off all I could in nvidia control panel (thinks like lod bias), and force an fps limit in nvidia inspector.

then it just runs on my system.

I had the same issue with that site, I ended up emailing the admin to get my account up and running. Good luck getting MW3 to run on 7, I've seen a few who said try downloading and running XP mode. I didn't try it yet but I gave up trying to run it on 7, I have parts around to make a 95/98 machine which might be quicker than fighting with 7.

another thing you can try is running the 3dfx version with a wrapper called nglide.

works great for need for speed high stakes/road challenge.

I think the things that matters most are:

GPU architecture
Driver version

control panel settings might fix some problems though.

Yes - it can be made to work stabely on Win7 x64 + a recent AMD card.

There is an AMD fix/patch someone put together that fixes an OpenGL call on the mechwarrior3.org fansite forums - that got the game loading for me in 3d rendered mode without the background animation on the menu screens running out of control.

Secondly, to stop the problem with "bouncing" APC's in game etc - force VSYNC on via your AMD control panel. This stops most of the problems with units flying into the sky etc. Not all of them, but enough to make the game very playable.

I completed the campaign mode on my modern PC while waiting to get onto the MWO beta, with an i7, windows7 x64 and an AMD6970, running the 3d Renderer - so I guarantee it can be done.

I figured it out--it was SLI being enabled. You have to disable SLI for everything though to get it to work--not just for Mechwarrior 3.

I have it installed but i have issues, when i can only use 640x720 or whatever it is because if i use any other resolution, it is shifted to the left and cuts off the left side. also, i get a weird pulsing in FPS when i play, i notice it when im walking. ill walk fast and itll slow down and get really slow, then it will speed up all of the sudden. anyone know what to do?

Try looking for a config or options file. With MW4M I had to go into options.ini and change the graphics driver from a -1 value to 1 (which actually enabled my graphics card for the game). After that I have had no fps issues, not sure if it will generalize to MW3 or not.

It may be pesky in letting you edit it, I had to copy the file to a different directory, change the value, and replace it in the original directory. If I do the auto-config it resets the options and I have to change it again.

I know that this is thread is quite old, but someone might find this useful . But I think I finally got this game working on my pc. Even with vsync on forcing fps to stay on 60 the apc jumped out of the map. I changed the refresh rate of my monitor refresh rate from the Catalyst Control Center (Ati user here) go to "Desktop managment" and then to "Desktop properties" and set the refresh rate to 30 Hz. If you have Vsync on forced like I have the APCs will stop jumping out of the map. It may jump a litlle bit but you won´t have the problem anymore
