I wanted to get some clarification on something... I have watched the in-game play, but I do want to double check on how the combat system is going to work... I know in MMORPG's, the combat system is done through "rolls" to determine hit and damage. Is this same system going to apply to this game?
Because, I'm going to be INSANELY pissed if I catch an Atlas running straight toward me and I light his center torso up with an alpha of lasers and guass rifles, to miss entirely because its Day 1 and based on my character level/development, the roll system decided that I should miss this shot...
Honestly, I'm personally not at all enthused about this "character development" stuff. It should all be skill on the battlefield IMO, how you work your throttle, how steady your hand is on the stick, how you approach or evade your opponent. Just how much is this development stuff going to affect actual combat? Or am I being too much of a critic?

It's a simulator, not an RPG, therefore hits are determined by where the crosshair is pointed and how accurate your weapon is. It is not an MMO, at least not how one usually defines it, there is no wide-open world, or hundreds of players fighting at once. The skill trees won't make you a better pilot, they'll just improve your Mech's performance and give you a broader range of options.
You have nothing to worry about. This was all covered in the FAQ, dev blogs and Q&As.

Firstly welcome to the forums
Now.
Head over here and all your questions should be answered.
http://mwomercs.com/...-pretty-please/
Read the dev blogs, dev Q&A's ,Dev interviews and the misc announcement threads.
Once you have checked those out you will see there is basis for concern.
To reinforce Ramrods post.
This game is NOT an MMO, it is NOT eve/wow/war/oldrep with mechs.
If you need to compare it to any game it will be more like MW4, Battlefield or LOL in its organization of games and matches.
Each match effects the overall events of the Inner Sphere, this is where the "Online" part of MW:O comes into it.
I really wish they didn't call it that, way to many people get the wrong idea from the title.

xp will be spent on skills that make you more effective in combat, tighter shot spread, better dmg absorbtion, faster movement, but you will shoot where you aim, to counter you hitting all your shots you will be bouncing around on the move, getting shot, and your weapons adjust on the fly to target where the bullseye is centered.
