MWO starts in 3049, and seems planned to follow a 1:1 time progression (that is, 1 day in-game = 1 day in reality).
As such, it is not likely to be generally available to the Inner Sphere (and, thus, players) for a quite some time...

Even the Clans stopped building them prior to their "Golden Century" (which began in 2834, with the death of Nicholas Kerensky).
As such, the only group that would be building and/or using them until the WoB J***d is the Wolf's Dragoons.

One good source is Sarna.net. It's similar to Wikipedia, but is specific to BattleTech/MechWarrior and thus has much more depth and detail with regard to BT/MW-related subjects.
Another source is Solaris7.com. it contains links to many BattleMechs' technical specifications (just be sure to enter "MajorTom" in the "Designer" search field).
Battlecorps.com serves as a repository and source for BT/MW fiction, and includes worls and new submissions from long-time BT/MW writers like Blaine Lee Pardoe, Loren L. Coleman, and Herbert A. Beas II (the current Product Line Developer for BT/MW on behalf of the franchise's license holder, Catalyst Game Labs).

Catalyst also has the BattleTech Universe Guide online, which gives a relatively-quick-but-shallow-on-details explanation of the backstory from the beginning (humanity begins to leave Earth) to the point just before the beginning of the Word of Blake J***d (the same point where the story-mode in MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries ends).

4x LB 10-X AC's in chainfire mode! *nice imagination*
Yeah...it would be a dream to pilot one of these monsters in MWO. Supported with its four Medium Pulse Laser, this machine could shred an Atlas in few seconds. Long time favorite non-omni assaultmech. But it has its weaknesses. Very slowly and poorly amored for a 100 ton mech and it hasn't much ammonition. It is a deathtrap to pilot an ANH-2A on open fields, but at close range, its a ..."Annihilator"!
Let's hope that we see this beast in MWO again.

As it happens, MW3 and all of the other BT/MW video games are considered non-canon.
