I don't think it helped that the council lords started stripping Kerensky of his power and titles.
"A year later, on the 10th of October 2780, the Council Lords gathered and stripped Kerensky of his title of Protector. Ten months later, the Lords had not chosen a new First Lord, each claiming the title and position for him or herself, and the Council was dissolved by the Lords on the 12 of August 2781." (Sarna.net).
Perhaps he also foresaw that it wouldn't stop there and he would be eventually stripped of all power and he would be unable to prevent the misuse of the men and women formally under his command.
And even with the superiority of the SLDF to the house armies, consider that in the retake of Terra all the fortifications had been filled and replaced with the Rim Worlds Republic military and there was still immense devastation here.

The real Alexander Kerensky and the fictional one acted based on the information at hand. Could have prevented millions of deaths, but hindsight is 20/20.
I don't blame him or the fictional one for their actions. They tried to do the right thing but corruption and manipulators seeped in, and for a shortsighted gain, signed the death sentence of future generations.
