Hate to break it to the OP but Heavy Gear was on the MW2 engine (ablative armor) and Heavy Gear 2 was also ablative, no where in that series is there regeneration of any kind, same with Mech as is should be.

Someone has to put in a FAQ that IS rediscovered alot of lostech in the first half of 31th.

And C* tried to prevent that as well (by manipulating the FWL), trying to prevent the discovery of the Helm Memory Core, and attempting to kill off the Gray Death Legion.
Most of the LosTech was rediscovered around the War of '39, and most of it was still prototypes during that war.
Faulty CASE, bad DHS, stuff like that. A few minor innovations existed back in those days, though, TSM, Hatchet and EW Equipment.

Well it's still not like IS lived in caves and Clans flew death stars.
Most clan equipment (except for mechs, *** **** why do they get all the cool mechs?) is just upgraded SL one while IS sports the originals or slightly better.

Not gonna get into genetical engineering vs natural selection dispute though~~~

XL Fusion....................3035 Lyran Commonwealth

Interesting to note many of these items only went extinct by the mid 2800s, some where a bit latter (pulse lasers went extinct by 2950).

Per the War of 3039 source book, many of these items where in prototype form at that time. Only becoming production quality in the decade before the clans arrived. Though how accurate that is at this point I do not know, as the book lists the Lyrans and Davions as having Gauss rifles but not the FWL who reintroduced the thing.

Throughout the Mechwarrior game series i have seen many adaptions of armors and how they work and dont work.It came to my mind the best armor system was the inner and outer armor system used in mechwarrior 2 and 3 with different armor types for bolth armor systems. But even then it was so wasy to take a arm or leg off rendering the mech useless.I always imagined what it would have been like or could be if the arms and leg hitboxes and armor were as tough as the CT=Center torso. Also it would seam by 3049 there would have been adaptive regenerating armors if you were in hiding for a certian lenght of time they would renew or possibly energy shielding to withstand the assault of heavy weapons placed on mech type weapons platform. We see some of these examples in other mech type games like HeavyGear & HeavyGear2 and also SupremeCommander & SupremeCommander2.There were also many fine examples of mechlabs and armor types in other mech type games like ShattedSteel,StarSiege,And EarthSeige & EarthSeige2.

Please, for the love of the Devs and CBT gurus, NOOOO, Regenerating armor and Shields
Canon TT armor only .
This is not Star Trek, Star Wars, or other sci-fi game. If the devs put in some of that experimental armor or shield tech that was in the Maximum Tech, Tech Manual or Solaris Tech, they need to counter balance it with high expense, increased weight /critical and negative traits, and rarity. I think that would be funny to see a battle with a stock Awesome vs someone's medium with a Blue Shield Particle Field Damper ( it reduces only PPC damage)

(L)AMS acts as an energy shield would irl. Timed countershots neutralizing the threat.
Entirely possible with PPC, for example.

Not advocating or anything but it's not THAT supernatural, the theory is really simple and anti-missile systems already exist.
Lasers could be countered by a varitation of reactive armor rather than simply reflecting it as well.

Laser Anti Missile System is a fine example of tech that could be introduced when the canon says so, It has positive and negative traits. Not an energy shield, really a point defense small pulse laser that engages to destroy the first missiles salvo that it sees hitting the mech. Causes a lot of heat. Not likely you would armor on your missiles to counter the Laser AMS. Simillar to the Ammo AMS that is in the intro tech.

Energy shields, as a whole, would be POSSIBLE, as all that's required is a magnetized plasma field (the kind that EVERY fusion reactor produces), and will likely be a part of our real world experience here in the next few years. That said, I don't think they should be included in MWO, not just because they weren't a part of the canon, but also because they provide an unfair advantage to the Assault mechs and any other mech with a heavy shield generator. Imagine seeing an Atlas with both arms torn off, it's armor torn to shreds, and it's cockpit slightly damaged... an easy kill under almost any circumstance... but then you take a look at it again, and it's ENERGY SHIELDS say 100%!!! Sorry, but that's NOT the MWO experience I'm hoping for... if you want energy shields, you'll have to look for a different universe, as this one doesn't have them.

If you want Heavy Gear, Earthsiege/Starsiege, MechAssault 2, Shattered Steel, Armored Core, Steel Battalion, Chomehounds, etc etc etc, then go play those games, or try to get other devs to resurrect them. Do NOT try to make Mechwarrior in to those games.

1) Those are all inspired by or direct copies of the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe. Battletech was first.

2) Mechwarrior/Battletech has had its canon and lore set-in-stone (other than a few minor retcons) for over 20 years.

There is no need to change everything just to make all the ADD kids who can't deal with armor that goes away permanently and no magical shields happy. This is what Battletech is and has been since the beginning. There is no need to change it now.

Can we have powerups too?

Yes, and a giant minigun that shoots fireballs. But only allow it and the shield on a single 'Mech so it will be better than everything else. And of course, give said 'Mech plenty of other powerful weapons so it would still be a threat even without said gun.

/sarcasm off

That burned. I need to go wash my hands after typing all that.

So many stupid games with regenerating health these days. Pardon my french but most developers are making games for ******* as of late. Mechwarrior is the antithesis of pussified gaming. Either you can handle it or you can't.

Just say NO to regenerating health/armor/whatever. It's DUMB.

Besides, IF you wanted to say it is realistic, well, then answer me this: Where do the nanoparticles come from to regenerate the armor? It isn't like mechs are living organisms. You have to get the mass from somewhere and the reactors on these beasts do not output nowhere near enough to convert energy to matter (if it were ever deemed possible beyond subatomic particles like the create in particle accelerators). So, where's it going to come from? It'd have to come from reserve tanks which would take... TONNAGE... These mechs don't possess string flux generators. It isn't part of the lore, not to mention with the tech that they have, it just isn't possible.

Get over it. Learn to pilot your mech or become part of the cleanup crew. Your choice.

Real world??

Nuclear power is fission and produces no magnetized plasma field. Fusion power is produced by magnetized plasma fields and the last successful test to produce fusion power didn't last more than .5 seconds. physasists believe commercial power production is still unlikely before 2050 not the next few years.

What I'm eager to discover is just how will they create good long battles in this game.

I mean, if mech legs can be blown off when an entire team focuses fire on a single mechs leg, then there is going to be mechs dropping constantly and battles would not last long.

That is where energy shields would come in and being able to transfer power to leg shielding would allow players under fire to last that bit longer while still holding damage. Shielding could allow as high as 60-80% bleed through.

If they have another way to ensure battles rage for longer than 10 minutes I would like to hear about it. I strongly feel territory games need long battles OR lots of small battles over a single territory before the territory is actually won/lost.

I have never been mean on any forum and i'll try not to be now, but... StarTrek, StarWars ect. has shields, MechWarrior doesn't. by the sounds of it, your not familiar with the BattleTech/MechWarrior Universe. So all I can say is, No need to re-invent the wheel. We have played single player, Multi-player and TT games in this universe for a long time and have had no need for them in any of the small skermishes or epic battles I have ever seen or been in.

This is done by balancing and various other methods, not by throwing tech in a game where it has no business being.

Besides, hitting legs and cockpits is harder than you think. Fire up a game of MW3 or MW4 or MW:LL (since those are the only ones that work on modern computers) and go around only trying to take out legs. It is definitely not as easy as it may seem. If PGI has mechanics and balancing down, legging will not be the end-all be-all it seems. Besides, in TT/Lore, legging didn't destroy a mech, just turned it in to a disadvantaged turret.

Played them all.

But this is not them all. This is a brand new thing and at some stage the devs will start doing things in it that never existed anywhere else in the mech world canon or not. It is inevitable otherwise after 3 years it will get boring.

All I remember is that they said the clock will keep ticking, time will keep progressing. So I can't help thinking that at some stage new technology will be introduced and need to. Someone said hitting legs is harder than I think, I don't agree.

Everything I read about the game so far, sounds like the game is going to be about shooting legs and when a team focuses fire on a single target to do it. What the heck will stop them?
