Actually Jin 金 refers to more to gold rather than metal. The word for metal would be Tie 铁.

Well, back in the days when the whole Battletech Universe was created, the cold war was still running somewhat hot, so the developers tried to mirror current political systems. That ended with House Davion being the good US guys, while the Capellean Confederation became the equivalent of the eastern bloc (namely Russia and China). Novels written in those times even hardened that view, they had a strong bias against Liao, Kurita and Marik.

All that changed over time, but there are enough people out there who still believe in the old times and hold true to their Davion-fanboy-being.
