Dropships fall out of the sky all the time, most likely pilot error. Surely you can't blame the manufacturer for these types of issues...

/quietly takes briefcase full of cash from Dynamico.

Well, I usually don't jump to conclusions, but, this is the third ISN Release referencing the Avenger. So, I'd say it's almost - almost - a bet we'll see this bird in-game. Wouldn't you?

Highly doubtful, since it isn't actually a mech carrier:

Sarna.net said:

The Avenger features a single 93 capacity cargo bay, mounted near the drive to the rear of the craft. This dual purpose bay can also be used as bomb bay during planetary bombing and strafing runs, and is generally split between this purpose and carrying 15 marines.

Wait did you say, "bomb bay"? That means, like a bomber, so, we'll be using this as a bomber.

Eh, maybe, but I'd put money on them using Aerospace fighters for that Commander module and not an Avenger. This is all just fluff for fun, these ISN feeds are in no way telling us what will or won't be in game.

Agreed Dihm, but if I remember properly, we can call down arty support and Aero Space support, correct (if you have the command modules)? Maybe this would fall under aerospace support, albeit a harsh one....but it brings up an interesting possibility.

And if this post has nothing to do with what will be in game (along with many others post like it which seems like they wont be game releated) it makes me wonder how they decided to provide the cannon based atmosphere/flavor for the game for non Btech followers. Are they using a dart board an old copies of source books, or doing a random search on Sarna? :-)

Randall Bills is a madman, that's how. ^_^

The problem with having the Avenger as the Aerospace support/straffing runner is that it's going to be BIG, way bigger than a few Aerospace fighters would be, and thus bringing up the problem of:

Quote

But we shot the Avenger a million times before it started/finished its run, why can't we damage it and blow it out of the sky!?!?!

i found this to be the most interesting part of the ships description.

The Avenger class was the first Inner Sphere DropShip design to be refitted with rediscovered Star League technology, the first newtech example slipping its mooring at Dynamico in 3048, and the only one in actual production before the Clan Invasion disrupted similar upgrades for other classes.

With all this press, I won't be surprised if you we see an occasional strafing run decorated with an Avenger-Class Kinetic Impactor

could still be used as an off map 'orbital bombardment' option. I'm beginning to think some of our Commander called resources will not be interactive to enemy fire.

You gave me an idea:

Missions where the Attacking team is prohibited from using off-map aerial support until ground forces disable the Defender's Surface-to-Air facilities.

Hmm that's the second mention of Avengers in these. IIRO. Do wonder if they'll be call-in-able strike sources....

They'd be an awesome source for the orbital strikes, and a lot more common than true warships (especially around 3049 in the Inner Sphere, where warships are essentially non existent.

It would be pretty epic seeing one of these come in at mach 3, flak blowing up all around it, guns blazing (and it's got a lot of guns). The thing passes and the Mach Boom comes in a few seconds after...like thunder, only louder.

Maybe they'll be the 'Mech carriers for the Dropship battles?

Well Avenger class Dropships often housed a Naval weapon such as a Naval PPC which were incapable of firing in atmosphere from what I can remember from battlespace rules set. Now the Avenger was a pretty rare ship so seeing these in mass is highly unlikely and Unlike the video games Destroying a dropship was a huge deal as the ability to create more was Highly limited. Thus the Avengers saw limited use there are other dropships with mounted artillery pieces in the nose of the ship designed to lend mech units they are transporting command and artillery support. How this would be reconized in the game is anyones guess.

Who is the manufacture?

That is a trick Question. The Avenger is manufactured by several companies.

Armament

Given its first strike role, the Avenger is impressively armed on all angles. In the nose weapons bay are two AC/5s, an AC/20, a LRM-20, and two large and two medium lasers. In each wing is a single PPC, a pair of AC/5's, an LRM-20 rack and two medium lasers. Face the rear is AC/2, an LRM-20 and two medium lasers. The Avenger's large ammo bays, especially for its LRM racks, allow it keep up steady rate of attack.

Cargo

The Avenger features a single 93 capacity cargo bay, mounted near the drive to the rear of the craft. This dual purpose bay can also be used as bomb bay during planetary bombing and strafing runs, and is generally split between this purpose and carrying 15 marines.

Variants
  • Upgraded Version - The Avenger class was the first Inner Sphere DropShip design to be refitted with rediscovered Star League technology, the first newtech example slipping its mooring at Dynamico in 3048, and the only one in actual production before the Clan Invasion disrupted similar upgrades for other classes. The primary changes are a switch to Double Heat Sinks and updating of its weaponry. Each set of twinned AC/5s in the nose and wings have been replaced by a single Gauss Rifle, the large lasers have been upgraded to extended range variants and the medium lasers have been switched for new pulse counterparts. The LRM launchers have all been upgraded with Artemis IV FCS, the only weapon removed completely being the sole rear facing AC/2.
Aldis Industries
"In 3025, Aldis Industries was the Inner Sphere's largest independent weapons producer. Their Terran headquarters was protected by Comstar's neutrality. At the fall of the Star League Aldis was a comparatively small firm. Since that time, Aldis has become one of the largest manufacturers of heavy tanks. They also owned some 'Mech production lines in Liverpool and Tokyo was home of some AeroSpace Fighter production lines."

Dynamico Limited
Dynamico Limited of Delavan is a Federated Suns based DropShip and Laser weapon manufacturer.

Rashpur-Owens Incorporated
Rashpur-Owens Incorporated is a DropShip and JumpShip manufacturer based in the Capellan Confederation.

Defiance Industries
With its Hesperus II facility the largest surviving single site BattleMech factory after the fall of the Star League, Defiance Industries is the foundation of the militaries of the Lyran Commonwealth, Federated Commonwealth and Lyran Alliance.
