I think you'll be fine when it comes to Mechwarrior and most other games. I have a 6870 and it struggles with max settings on some games, but primarily in warmer weather. Always turning up anti-aliasing seems to be what really hurts performance on newer generation games.

I'll just say quad-core processor and a card with 2 gigs DDR5 video memory both I can get overclocked by a friend of mine.

Up until today, I did have a MSI 8800gts 320mb as my vid card, with which i was planning on changing to a 560ti or something similar.

Lucky me, the 8800 just died, i get no issues when the pc is in safemode, but when trying to run it in normal (eg high level graphics) on win7 pro 64bit, it gives me artifacts a plenty.

so just ordered a shiny new MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozer 2 (1gb model) to replace it.

Its crampt in the case right now (just enough room to plug in the 6pin power lead), but looking at the 560, its the same overall size. I just hope the shield over the cooler is taken into account in its dimensions, because it looks like its longer than the actual card itself.

Just need to pick it up and fit it now.

Currently I have to save up money to even dream of building a new computer. But I know that my current computer runs Crysis 2 on medium with no lag, so I should be okay for the time being.

The first thing I will be upgrading is my Gfx card, from my current 9800GT to probably one of the newer ATi cards. Then it's off to locate a nice joystick.

Very nice system...OS is great...never a blue screen...but have to use emulator to run games (Wine)
Box is very quiet...runs cold to the touch on the outside (top).
I plan to upgrade the GPU as soon as the GTX680's come down in price a little.
Spent about $1000 give or take in building it...almost all the components came from TigerDirect.

How is the emulated performance, can you give me a percentage? I've often thought about switching to Linux but never wanted to give up the native performance of Windows.

Wyzak....I have tried Micro Slush (sorry...just my opinion) in various forms on the same equipment.
From all my testing in games (WOW being the main one) I have come to the conclusion that MS has less FPS in all areas than Linux (Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit).
This is just seat of the pants observation...in raids (with 25 people and lots of bad guys) I seem to average more than 60 FPS with Linux...and with MS..less than that (sometimes down in the teens).
The new Linux versions are so easy to use and can be made to emulate MS right down to the screen look.
My wife uses MS 7 64 bit .... and I have let her use my compy and she says it's just like MS....same look and feel.
We use very similar units...but my OS loads in less than 20 seconds and has over 14G of memory left after loading...hers takes up to 1 1/2 minutes...and never seems to stop loading stuff.
Her compy has less than 4 G of memory left after everything has loaded....and then the fun begins...her HD starts going nuts...pre-looking or something...if you let it sit for more than 5 minutes without touching the keyboard...it runs the HD through some sort of defrag and clean-up routine.
And...it just never stops!!
I think the OS is going to kill her HD.

I can't speak to WoW, but last I saw, Wine performed vastly worse than Windows for Crysis 2 (which would translate to MWO), so it depends on the game. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there still no proper DX10 support in Wine? Let alone DX11 support?

I've been out of the loop for awhile, but WINE has still never seemed ideal for gaming (functional, if you're willing to tweak a lot to get each and very game working, but not ideal)

There's a commercial variant of Wine which might be more up to the task. I wouldn't count on it, but it might be worth a look.
