I like the idea of being able to unlock little enhancements as you get to know the mech you are piloting. What I don't understand is how they are setting up the XP system and this need to pilot multiple variants to achieve elite status with it.

The way they are using elite related to a mech, sounds like a specialization skill. The more training you have with a specific item the better you become using it. However in MWO in order to become better with a mech you have to use multiple varieties. More general use and less specific use. After all you couldn't use a mech variant that generated low heat in the same way that you would one that generated high heat.

For an example: I've been training with a long sword. If I want to become specialized with that weapon I would continue to use that weapon and no other. While a short sword may seem similar and have some of the same basic functions, I wouldn't be able to become specialized in the long sword by training with it.

To me the same chasis should have the same basic enhancements, but each one would have some different elite enhancements, and some of the same elite enhancements.

So could someone please explain why it is being done backwards?

P.S. If this question has been asked and answered please direct me to the post.

You're looking at it wrong. It would be more like learning various martial arts involving the longsword. If you know how to use it in conjunction with a shield, a second weapon, or in varying types of armor you will be more skilled with that weapon. You would also be able to combine the various methods of using it into a more single cohesive and expert manner, which would make you more effective with that weapon. The more situations, and conditions in which you are knowledgeable of using the weapon the more effective you will be with it.

I don't think you have to use a particular variant to get XP towards a specific "branch", just using the mech of any variant gives you the XP then you choose what (branch) to spend it on.

Halfinax has the idea down, becoming elite with a chasis doesn't mean becoming elite with one singular loadout, it means exceeding average proficiency in every 'loadout' (in this case, variant to keep things sane) of a chasis. That means regardless of what varient you're hopping into, you're going to do well in it.

Before someone calls themselves 'elite' in a weapons system, they should know the discrepancies of that weapon system. You can't call yourself Elite with the M4 carbine if you're only capable of using the colt model with a specific scope/sight, forward grip, etc... To be considered someone elite with that system, you should be able to pick up Any M4 and perform at above average level.
