I was just wondering if MechWarrior Online will have support for the Razer Nostromo? And if yes, could anyone share their thoughts and opinions on it? I don't have one yet, but lately I've been interested in owning one, but I don't want to shell out all that money if it's bad. Otherwise, could you guys suggest an alternative gaming keypad?

Thanks!

I like my old Belkin nostromo. I use it in place of my keyboard or next to my joystick. It's more comfortable for my hand and wrist than my KB; my only complaint is the distance to the space bar is a little bit far. I've heard some bad things about the new Razer ones so I would recommend EBaying an older model Belkin one.

May save you some cash and last longer anyway.

Thanks guys! I guess if anything I'll just wait until there's a good deal out there or if the MW:O devs confirm that the Nostromo (Belkin or Razer) are compatible.

@ Glory: Thanks for the link, however... call me paranoid, but I prefer "brand new" when it comes to peripherals. I just had a couple of bad experiences when it came to used gadgets, that's why. So if it means waiting for a cheap new Belkin or just buying a Razer from my local retailer, I'd do it. :)

Been considering one myself; been quite happy with the Naga.

All of these type of devices are just a different kind of keyboard that you can program/map the same functions to. Anything I can do on my keyboard, I can do with my Belkin Nostormo n52. The other features like the wheel is treated like a mouse wheel. The d-pad can be configured like WASD or your throttle settings (which is what I do)

So, essentially you don't need to have the devs tell you whether it is supported or not, the game will see its inputs as keyboard inputs. It is nothing like a gamepad (which is kind of like a joystick) so no worries, get one if you want one - it will work.

I want one, but I'm not sure what it would do in addition to the G940.

This, Grem summed it up nicely.

I have used the Nostromo for years, from Dark Age of Camelot ,Warhammer Online, Skyrim and recently, World of Tanks. Its quite versatile for most games you want to play and as Grem mentioned, its supportable for every game right out of the box. I give it an "A" and highly recommend it.

I've been using a combination of the FLY5 joystick in the right hand and the Nostromo for my left hand for a few weeks now, and I love the combination. Highly recommended.

The only thing I did not like about the n52 was the size and "feel" of the palm pad. Some epoxy putty works nicely to modify it to really fit your hand well. I have big hands and the heel of my palm did NOT go just right. A "pad" of epoxy putty right at the "bottom" of the nostromo's palm rest (see where the symbol is on the palm rest in the image above?) built it up (about 1/8"-1/4") and does the trick. The putty stays soft long enough for you to really get it to mold the way you want.

This is a great point. The only thing that separates a gamepad from a keyboard is the size/form factor. If you don't need to place it anywhere special - stick with your keyboard.

Another n52 lover here. Mine's an older Belkin model as well. As Grem already summed up, it's 'just' a different kind of keyboard. Currently I'm one of the odder MW4:M players...I use the n52 and a trackball mouse. It may be unconventional, but it REALLY sits well with me.

I know the post is old, but I am planning on this route as well. I've used trackballs for years, but never for MW. I know there are limited options, Adeptis, but what trackball mouse do you use?

My buddy Silentwolff swears this is the best thing to happen to gaming.

I will be buying one soon myself.

I own an N50, 2 N52's, and 2 N52TE's (one Belkin, one Razer)

The N52 had decent hardware, and great software. The keys are stiff. The software is unreal. Will let you do just about any combo of key presses you can think of.

The Belkin N52TE was great hardware but really bad software. Some persistant issues like keys locking you into a turn, and other wierdness. On the other hand, as long as you arent trying to do anything crazy with macros etc, it will be fine.

The Razer N52TE has the great hardware of the first TE, but a much improved software suite. Not quite as good as the original N52 software, but very functional.

Ive always loved my Nostromos. I dont even bother playing with a keyboard anymore. Will probably be using my N52TE for my left hand and a Saitek joystick in my right for this game.

Got one.
love it.
use it all the time, sooo comffortable, and everything is in easy reach.
using alongside a logitech trackman wheel (trackball with ball under thumb)

you can put the keyboard away (or have it in front of you) and use the trackball and nostrommo on the arms of your chair :)

no problems with it for sim games (MW series, freelancer, freespace etc) and also good for MMORPG's (ddo - although clicky heavy builds like monk and wiz can be a little more challengeing)

never really tried to play with macros much (i got the razer one) simply focusing on keyboard replacement, for comfort more than any actual input advantage.
My mw4 profile:
the little thumb button for enemy targetting
big button on side for jj's
d pad for selecting weapons,
wsad cluster for turning and speed up/slow down
A few extra buttons for startup, shutdown, 'image enhancement' (love that from mw2) zoon, etc.

wouldn't use anything else

I use the Logitech version of this. The Razor basically uses a D-pad, at least it felt like that in the store. The Logitech has an actual Joystick. you get a much better feel of the angle of attack so you can use it for throttle and leg turn with a much better feel. My opinion, but I like the stick that has a slightly greater arc.

i used a trackball for MW4 and was decent with it. I have an old Microsoft trackball explorer.

Been using it for years. I'm going to be really upset when it finally dies.
