I'd choose player-available missions to be not the most decisive for the timeline, but kind of shifting a tone of the inevitable history-true outcome. I mean if it should be defeat (by the timeline), it will be, but we may change it from, say, utter self-decimation to proud retreat or something like that. With bonuses for efforts, of course)

Personal opinion is simply that we as the player base should have some significant say in the outcome of MWO. Having it on rails basically invalidates most of the concepts they are trying to bring to the table and reduces the game to basically meaningless deathmatches.

What of an FRR which holds fast? What of a Capellan "Empire"? Does the Federated Commonwealth have to fall? Why can't an outer sphere nation come to power? Can the clans not conqueror the entirety of the IS?

Not letting us, as the playerbase makes it all pointlessly deterministic. Why fight hard for a specific battle or goal when it doesn't matter if you win or lose? I mean, can you imagine trying to play as a clanner and realizing that you're already deus ex machina'ed, that you don't need to extend any effort to win because it's all scripted? Does this not undercut whatever you're accomplishments are? Now extend that to everything and you get the idea.

And then what? You become a what exactly. With your armies decimated and your Gov't system reduced to subservience. That would be END GAME!

Another question would be what happens after Tukiyyad? Do the Clan players just stand down. Do the Houses go back to biting each other?

It could all get rather messy.

My suggestion would be to make universe changing campaigns simulations. Your mech pilot has a chance to participate in a simulation of a historic battle, for training purposes, but players don't actually fight these battles. That way the canon is preserved, and people that want to play these battles can.

What I'm hoping for is that the Devs will include PvE campaigns that are part of the seminal battles of the BattleTech universe.

So the Battle of Twycross, instead of being a multi-player map, is series of cooperative multiplayer battles that are linked together.

You could also release classic scenario packs (4th sucession war or the Reunification Wars come to mind)

That way you can play in the universe effecting events without introducing a random result.

I'd pay good money for that.

What I would like to see is a hybrid approach. There are some major events that we should not be able to affect. The clans, for example, can't be turned away before they really invade. The DC can't be completely removed from the map (as much as I would like to be part of that win), just beat up. Key events have to happen by canon. That doesn't mean we can't be a part of it. Those major battles weren't just a lance on lance battle (or company on company) so we could be part of a battle that we win and affect the degree of the overall outcome but the 'war' will go canon and essentially be RPed. Some smaller events, like how much of a population gets destroyed or what planets are owned, or even how key alliance breaking battles go could be affected by our actions. So by the time the clans get the universe may look very different and they may not rock through the IS like they did in canon BUT they will have key victories that gains them access to the depth planets thus opening them for IS vs Clan battles which the IS can push them back faster. Especially since Victor will have twice as many planets as canon by the time they get here (had to say it!).

I want to be fully vested and I feel this is the best way. There are somethings we just can't stop from happening but the majority of it is on us.

good question! Give me option C, otherwise the game fails to be interactive

Give me the power to rebuild the Confederation!!
Capturing and preventing the capture of planets!

Small factions seem to favor open campaigns and they should......
why else would you paly the soon to be kicked in the teeth FRR or a toothless Confederation

As for the problem of a faction being wiped out, well........
go merc and get some revenge!!
or perhaps some day long down the line a new server will be set up back at 3049

lets have the option to play as the survivors of said faction and get some revenge!!

Slight fix but otherwise in full agreement here! :D

Lots of delusions of grandeur in this thread. Well, let me chime in as well...

I'd like to become Primus of ComStar instead of Myndo Waterley and then later on use Victor Midget-Davion as a footstool. And instead of bothering to fight the SmokeKitties back in the Pentagon Worlds, we could just nuke all the planets they're on back to stone age. An easier, albeit not as "clean" solution. :(

Go with the dev's - the majority of worlds, including those where significant events happen, are designated "Core Worlds" and thus we wont take part in the events. What we will do is fight obn worlds where there isn't a scripted event. We can change the look of the edges of the Houses. As for the Clans - I would imagine if you want to stay away from FRR or are in Marik then you could avoid them altogether, especially if your a merc.

I am hoping that there will be a middle ground as usual.. but I enthusiastically agree that being a contributor means I am contributing to a goal.. if the goal is little more than driving a mech in combat, I can do that already, many options exist. I love the MWO graphics, but if this is the case, I will say my enthusiasm for the product will be greatly decreased. I want to drive my enemies from their worlds with friends.. not just win a round of combat... MW4 and LL allow us to do that already.

I am here for an opportunity to do that and MORE, contributing to a common goal and not having the history rammed down our collective throats as a predetermined outcome regardless of our efforts to be successful in combat.

Would I still play.. sure, but why join a group, a regiment, develop a strategy? If were all randomly dropped Red Vs Blue Style. Our effect on the greater political and military environment of the game must create those diverse alterations in the world.. or our actions leave us in a very pretty but limited.. battlemech 1st person shoot simulator, not Mechwarrior, but a Battletech sim.

Which is a like having a very pretty girlfriend who has already scheduled your sex life in her calendar for the next 25 years, regardless of how you treat her or what you do. No surprises, no romance, static.. best analogy I could come up with. And like boring sex (or pizza every night for life).. I'm sure MWO will be fun, but like I said it will be significantly less than I had hoped for.

Agreed .... Personally I think that if we do have free will ... it should ONLY be as mercs ... and then we should have the resources of mercs ie living from hand to mouth, from contract to contract, trying to keep the holes in our mechs plugged ...

You might say ... I want to rebuild the capellan conf. ... okay great ... you are a mechwarrior ..you follow orders. So no free will there.

and if, as mercs, we get big ... then we should draw the attention of one of the great houses and ... be bi t ch slapped!!! mercs are small fish.

The problem is though that people want to be free to make choices and rework the universe but they dont want the universe to fight back.

Sure we should be able to take a planet from liao, kurita, davion, steiner marik etc ... but when the multiple battalions they sends to wipe you out arrive people will say ...no fair.

Also ... if we have free will there should also be consequences for death ... ie ... you can die. Otherwise where is the fun. The challenge?

When the universe marches in and kicks your but then ... you are dispossessed at best and most likely dead. Start a new character with 0 xp. You will get a universe like EvE where people run away rather than fight unless they have overwhelming numbers. For fear of losing their shiny ride.

How long will a regiment of mechs last against the armed forces of the dragon?

Sure introduce a patch at some point in the future that allows us to ride off into the the periphery and start wars over backwards dustballs. but we will never be able to match the successor states.

So for me ... I would want to be able to 'be there' when the big stuff happens ... but not be a mover and a shaker ... it should be on the fringe ... we raid an ammo dump ... then find out that, while out ...the clans over ran our staging area ... so we are being evacuated off world.

Also in addition ... how will you travel between worlds ... you expecting to have jumpships?

How will you feed your world?

Also ..it means the clans are not balanced ... and not played by players ... they should be as vastly superior as they were meant to be. There is a reason the FRR was overrun. They weren't asleep. slacking off. They got slaughtered!

We are the small fish, swimming in a big ocean full of organized hungry whales.
