My current rig is a Antec 900 Core 2 Duo E6400 with a Nvidia GTX 8800, and 2GB corsair dominator memory.

I am in need of a upgrade.

Keeping in mind that I will only use the box to play games such as MWO, what iNTEL based builds can you all reccomend? I can spend about 1200 or so on the system. A friend kept tellling me some months ago to wait on new graphic cards, so I am not sure if they are out yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Also note, if you reccomend a particular model sold online I would look at those as well, however usually I prefer to build my own.

While I am confused by the preference for Intel given AMD's release of Vishera giving them something more of a price/performance advantage versus Intel, I would not step below an i5 with Intel should you have the budget. However, for games like MWO, once you have a quad core CPU, the most important aspect is to have a good graphics card. The current 28nm generations are out in full as of a few weeks ago. Although at lower budgets more of a balance is recommended in order to get the best performance possible.

However the first thing that I would need to give a solid recommendation for an overall build would be a budget estimate as it stands.

Price/performance for the wallet = vishera
Pure performance = Intel

Vishera is a marketed improvement over bulldozer it's still behind Intel where it counts tho and thats in pure performance.

Op needs to decide what's more important, but a $1200 intel build should be readily doable

Given that AMD's Vishera in many aspects competes with lower end i5's in low threaded performance at stock speeds and competes strongly with IB i7s in multithread gives it an aspect of pure performance on it's own. Though yes, for a $1200 build it would be readily doable, however at that price there is a better balance of both lightly threaded and multithreaded performance on AMD's part with Vishera. An i7 of course is a better CPU in most cases if the budget is there, though for the $100 more you are paying for marginally higher single thread performance, lower power consumption, and/or higher performance after high overclocks.

Theory and benchmarks are all well and good and I support people using them.

I honestly hope your not re-doing your bulldozer stance, for gaming Intel is still a superior choice and the benchmarks support that.
And after my experience in real life with bulldozer I can safely say Intel won in gaming performance hands down.

If your on a tight budget AMD is the way to go most definately, however for 1200 and i5 2500k/3570k and good GPU is certainly possible.

I just got a new system built (happened to get an i7 2600k, mobo + ram gratis, which was nice), so I splurged on a OCed 670gtx and SSD. Cannot recommend the card enough, game just flies and it's quite quiet except on the forest map. But it/'s a safe bet - I did look at the AMD cards but the word I got was that they were much more noisy, which was a key factor for me.

As for SSD, any of the new models should perform well as far as I can tell, it certainly flies for me!

Amd Vs. Intel is immaterial in this thread, the OP asked for Intel reccomendations.

I would not use the I5 2500k, you might as well spend the $10 more for the 3570k or if overclocking isn't your thing save $5 for the 3570. If you are building a new pc you get lower power usage, pcie 3, plus other improvements.

Game benchmarks would suggest the FX-8350 to be just behind an i5-3470. While not quite as fast as a 3570 in gaming at stock, it still maintains the advantage in future applications or currently highly multithreaded applications.

It honestly depends on whether the OP is overclocking or not, as Sandy Bridge parts overclock better than IB, although at stock clocks IB is faster. Aside from that, PCIe-3.0 has no real-world advantages for graphics cards at this time, as it wasn't until the Geforce GTX 690 that a PCIe-1.0 x16 lane started to become a liability in terms of bandwidth.

For the Intel vs AMD point, I would rather state the option as being there as Vishera only came out a couple of days ago and until then Intel would be a clear choice for gaming at a higher price point. as such there is a possibility the OP is unaware of the new processors. In any case, I will post a couple of my recommendations within the posted budget soon.
