We should have this option. When you're down for the count and the enemy is closing in....take him with you.

In my old tabletop games we had a running joke where one of the pilots reskinned the rookies' self destruct buttons as 'send help'

That would be kind of funny, too.

I don´t like that idea personally. This could go wrong... at least if there is no penalty and no purchasing/repair costs or whatsoever. Especially when we take a look at the Stackpole Rule. I could imagine some players just hunting down spawnzones/bigger piles of mechs with cheap, light and fast mechs. Especially when there is an XP system.

You know... get a Flea, prey for two slow fat mechs in a city map and booooom. Level up and two dead heavies.

I loved High Explosives in Vengence. Dang shame MekTek took them out cause people were whining about them.

the only sort of self-destruct I wanna see is from mechs erupting due to an ammo explosion, but other than that.. no.

NO SELF DESTRUCT. WE ARE NOT PLAYING IN SOME **** WOBBY JIHAD!

Random engine crit explosions sure fine, but it can never be player controlled.

This. The only time when you "self destruct" should be when you ****** up your own mech management and failed @ piloting. Big time.

Manually controled exploding should be avoided.

Oh, you time the self-destruct with a well-timed eject, of course.

Had a friend who's mech was keeled over, and he ended up ejecting into a mountain.

Rolled for pilot damage for both the explosion and the mountain. He lived. We never heard the end of it.

At the very least a mech going critical needs to damage other nearby mechs, regardless of cause.

i'd rather see something where a stackpoling mech only really damages mechs that are point blank, or get smacked by direct hits from mech chunks, everyone else should just deal with getting buffeted by the pressure wave with an increasing risk of getting knocked over the closer you are to the epicenter. Also some heat gain.

So when Kai Allard Liao made his mech go critical on Twycross taking the pass down on the Jade Falcon's Falcon Guard you have to go re read that chapter. Please. He does not just flip a switch and BOOM he has Dr Diedre? pulling out cables and control panels and ejected with her when he knew it was going to blow. Sorry in the middle of combat your pilot is not going to get out of his seat and rip out panels to make the VERY secure reactor shielding **** out and let the reactor fail.

Kai had to stand there and issue his 'batchall' and dragged it on as long as he could with the Falcon commander to give her time to rip the guts out of his cockpit.

So NO. NO SELF DESTRUCT it does not work like that. Battlemechs are EXPENSIVE!!! Whole old saying Life is cheap, Mechs are expensive. No commander wants to chance his team wins and has no possible salvage. He does not care if you die in that mech, just do not get it shot up too much.

Self-destruct should be a last-resort with serious consequences (like: you lose the 'Mech permanently). I don't see why not--just key the damage to the engine's rating and the lights won't be running screaming for the nearest assault-class and giving them their last hug. Or maybe they will? A two million dollar bomb is not exactly the most cost-effective way of taking out dangerous opponents.

Self-Destruct in the past was used for griefing more than anything else. Gameplay-wise, the penalties were so horrendous that there was no reason to do it outside of ******** your team over, denying a kill or just plain not caring

I'd rather we close that door now instead of leaving it where it is.
No, thank you.

i hate the idea of self destructing your own mech on purpose... its like in mechwarrior 4 mercs multiplayer some punk hides in a corner with jump-jets and arms its mech to the teeth with gauss and PPC or heavy large lasers... think about the people

...A mech that's already going critical might not be too bad to have the option to force the explosion, but it should not provide extra money/exp to the pilot, and cost more to repair. Nor should it work with a mech in relatively good repair. Of course, in that case, you might as well not have the option at all, so let's take occam's razor on this and not allow people to blow up their own mechs.

There is one way to make use of self destruct.

Not a self destruct in the suicide bomber sense, but controlled breach of the reactor that destroys the mech.

How would this be useful? It would step into the salvage discussion, where opponents might be able to grab enemy mechs off the field.

If you lose the battle, the enemy would not be able to salvage your machine, and neither will the player. Its not something people will do often, except in a long, organized campaign event where you really don't want your enemy having more resources to work with.

It also makes people cry when they have to blow up their baby, which is more funny for everyone else.

i rather like the idea of using SD as a way to spite someone out of taking your mech.

There is a certain drama about it, that you can hate an opponent so much that you are willing to destroy your own mech, just to make sure nobody gets it. Especially if its obvious they are trying to disable your mech as carefully as possible in an attempt to take it.
