I have recently discovered that you can play Mech Warrior Living Legends for free using the Crysis Wars Trial found on File Planet.

Sadly there seems to be a catch, you will only be able to play on the server named =CJW=Funbocks|TSA/TC.

As I learn more about the issue I will be posting here.

All the servers come up for me.

If you continue to have the issue might I suggest you hit the MWLL forums. Might be an issue that you are using a Trial version.

Cheers.

Allowing the users to play MWLL using the free crysis wars trial is against the development team's contract with crytek; funbocks is a user hacked server that circumvents the development team. I believe it's actually illegal to use it since you're using the cryteck engine to play their game (even though it's modded beyond recognision) without paying for the rights to use their engine. Please do not encourage people to use free trial/hacked keys to play MWLL, as it hurts the development team and community to do so.

I disagree Nathiel. I understand your view, but I have talked to a lot of people who do not want to risk their money on a game they are only paying for a mod they are not sure they are going to like. If it had a SP or something it would give people less of a fear, but a strictly MP? If anything it could be treated as a trial of MWLL, as to play other servers you need to buy the game to get to other servers.

If MWLL wants to have a chance to be competitive with player base, they need to be free as they have MW4, which is free, MWO which will be free, and MWT that will be free as well. For people to even waste 10 dollars on something that is strictly MP and they do not know if they will even like it, even more so in the day's economy?

I just fired off a message to Crytek's community manager what their thoughts are on a Crysis Wars Trial being used.

If you want to try out MWLL for free, do the following:
1.  Download and install Crysis Wars Trial http://www.fileplane...sis-Wars-Trial-
2. Install this patch http://www.fileplane...Wars-Patch-v1.4
3. create a gamespy account
4. follow these steps http://wiki.mechlivi...to_Install_MWLL
5. run the game and click Quick play and enter in a random string of numbers and letters
6. If you followed the MWLL steps above the game lobby should appear
7. Join the server =CJW=Funbocks|TSA/TC mix
8. have fun

Good idea on shooting a message off to the crytek guys... trust me I sorely wish MWLL was free as well. It just seems like a disservice to the devs to do something with their software that could get them in trouble after all the hard work and dedication they put into it to bring us a "modern" battletech game during the "dry season". If you succeed at any length to find a way to let players at least try the game for free without breaking the rules then I will love you forever, promise.

It's not like there aren't any free and open source game engines.

Still, "it's just for a mod" is no excuse for piracy.

How is this piracy? The medium is a legal Crysis Wars Trial.

Alright I headed over to the MWLL forums to find the closest thing to an official verdict on the matter for us.

(off site link)
http://forum.mechliv....html#msg296422

It appears that according to KingLeer, they do not condone the use of using a trial version of Wars, and also don't allow threads about the topic over on their boards, but ultimately the choice is left up to the player. So after the research I guess they can't technically get into legal trouble for it (someone inform me if there's a piece of information out there that says otherwise), but they definitely want you to help support Crytek's engine by buying a legit copy.

I have now been moved to indifferent about whether you choose to use the trial version just to try it, but remember that if you like the mod to buy wars when its on sale and come play with the rest of us! Oh, and thanks for kicking my butt into gear and making me actually go around looking it up Coffi

I look at the Crysis Wars Demo, being used as a MWLL demo, you can only connect to one server. This allows someone to try the mod before they go spend the 10-20 dollars for a copy of Crysis Wars.

Yeah, or stay there forever, or at least until MWO comes up  .

So, I guess I'll recommend this to a friend (buying stuff legit here is the same as buying the engine - no-one can afford it due to insane inflation and crap ). I have legit crysis wars but no computer to handle it...

If anything, doesn't the problem lie with the "=CJW=Funbocks|TSA/TC" server allowing people on a trial/noCDKEY version to join, rather than a trial version being available and the mod working with the trial...?

Does it matter? IMO this allows someone to try the mod, which will increase it's awareness, which is a damn good thing. It is a premium mod, and has won a award every year from ModDB since something liker 2008 when it was just in development.

Forgive my necro, but I discovered this thread only now.
I am the admin of Funbocks, and I'd like to clarify a few things.

First off, the cdkey check is disabled for one specific reason. Many recent purchasers of Crysis (especially on Steam) are having a lot of trouble with broken keys. It is a very common problem that confuses and frustrates many who are new to the mod. The many help requests and stickies in the MWLL forums are evidence of that.

So I offer them an alternative, at least until they figure out what's wrong (assuming they ever do) and persude EA to give them a new key.

I didn't know that it also allows players with the Crysis Wars trial, and it certainly wasn't my intention. But I also don't mind. MWLL needs all the players it can get, and if this attracts new players, then that is great!
Players still need to buy Crysis to get access to all servers, so I don't have any moral objections.

Having said that, we do not condone piracy, but we're also not trying to prevent it. As long as disabling the cdkey check yields a net benefit for the playerbase, it'll stay this way.

The Key Problem is a known Problem over on the MWLL Boards.
There is also a known Solution for that very Problem too.
Basically, the Key gets written to the Windumb Registry wrong.
You have to manually edit the Key in the Registry to get it to work.

Regarding this common CD-Key issue, someone has recently written an extremely handy program that manually detects and checks CD-Key's with Gamespy's server. It also allows manually changing the key and writes it to the registry automatically. It works for both the disc version and Steam version of Crysis Wars.
