Now don't get me wrong - it's a striking design, but I question why such a Japanese-looking design is applied to a mech named after the Chinese god of death and who's most famous pilot was of Capellan descent.

That being said - if I'm mistaken about the red sunburst being a Japanese design, feel free to correct me and leave it at that.

That thought crossed my mind. Looks more like something out of the Combine. I suspect the paint job is documented somewhere in canon materials and they didn't just make it up though..

It was a Solaris mech, it was most likely painted up into something awesome and marketable. Samuri are awesome and marketable.

It's the Rising Sun Flag, used by the Japanese Navy/Military and trust me, no Chinese person would find that awesome or marketable. Still a lot of anger over the Sino-Japanese war crimes and the rising sun design is seen as a symbol of Japanese imperialism. It's got about the same emotional impact as a swastika does for people in the west.

In my opinion Piranha should have redesigned the mech (like they've done with everything else) and avoided the whole awkwardness of it, but seeing as the mods have locked all the prior threads on the subject I think it's safe to say it's here to stay.

It is canon plain and simple. No other reason for it. Way to much butt hurt and political correctness going around judging something set in the future on today's standards. The character who owned the mech in canon was of Chinese origins. The mech was used in the Solaris Arenas and the paint scheme was used for style purposes.

The reason it is a red & white sun burst is because the stable which Justin fought for on solaris was Cenotaph Stables. Cenotaph stables colors are red and white. They just happened to be owned by liao sypethatics.

Don't think I'd be seeing any arguments for lore accuracy if it was packing swastikas or the SS symbol as a paintjob. Not saying I'm personally offended by it, I'm not. A whole bunch of Chinese/Korean/S.E.A players will be though.

The Japanese Imperial flag simply doesn't exist anymore in BT universe. It's long forgotten history. Allard simply made a design using the colors of his team that he liked. That is it.

People are far too sensitive to a fictional universe.

Seriously now, I see where you're coming from. Although rather than "what Allard was thinking", it's better to ask "what was the person who created such a color scheme for Allard thinking". I don't know much in-depth about Chinese culture, but Japanese elements in Battletech are a bizarre mismatch that makes me think the people responsible simply didn't do their homework (to their defense though, it's not that uncommon in entertainment) and were putting whatever seemed "cool" in there.

here's my conundrum. those of us who are aware of the YLW's, let us call it, ironic paint scheme are only in on the joke if we know the lore. to know that the Japanese symbol is on a Chinese decendants mech means that we are familiar with the lore. the mech its self is not offensive in any way, the lore and knowledge there of makes it offensive if anything could. any asain who knows the lore woudln't be offended, but would need to know the lore in order to be offended, and if they were offended it would be an offense taken with the lore, not the mech as it is in MWO.

now the Japanese use shwasticas and crosses in several of their animated features. Naruto has a character with a shwasitca on his head. Full metel alchemist had a test subject on a crucifix. dragon ball z had a character named after the devil (Hurcule was called Sat4n). these were all changed in translation to a western world since these simbols in of them selves are offensive in western audiences.

What needs to be answered is: Will ignorate gamers in asian demographics make the connection that YLW is a Chinese mech with a Japanese Icon painted on it?
