According to Community Warfare QA, there won't be(at least at launch) an ability for players to incorporate their own insignias in to the game. I wonder - why?! Of course, it'll take some time and efforts to make another one texture layer with alpha channel + code for uploading and implementation, but it isn't nearly as hard as 'rocket science', i guess. Am i mistaken?

I believe that insignia is a very important aspect for any community and serves in the first place not for a visual identification, but as significant part of the unit's philosophy and spirit.

What you think?

Customization is great and can really boost morale. People love to add a personal touch to things.

People also like to draw dicks.

Quite simple, really. Nobody, except the degenerate trolls that do this sort of thing, wants to see 'mechs with penises and ******.cx all over the place. Whatever people recommend to get around this problem - an approval pipeline that involves the community management team, for instance - is likely to be too much of a hassle and not worth the headache for PGI.

Remember when MW4 released and every single 'mech was pink with rainbows and ***** all over? They want to avoid that kind of unprofessional imagery in their game.

i really agree with the fact we should have our own personal insignia on our mech because it adds exictment to the game. i remeber on MW4 mercs i would look all over the mech to find who i was fighting and would go as far as to not kill the dude to find out where he was from. ;)

It comes down to manageability for the Devs and other community operations personnel. To screen out the objectionable material would require a submission, that, as has already been mentioned, might be too large a task to deal with. I agree that there will probably be an option of purchasable insiginia at some point, and then we may be able to submit designs for unit insignia, like, oh I dunno...a Banzai Institute Logo perhaps? ;)

I would love to see unit identifiers on mechs, but I do not want to see them become obscene or in poor taste. Before that happens, I would rather despense with them. I do not understand why there are people whose idea of cool is to offend. Freedom of expression carries a responsiblity to others that is often ignored now days.

Its simple, really. By including a reporting system (as basically every online game these days has), you could report the obscene insignia, and then that person would lose the capability to have one, or their corp/unit would lose it (depending on how we would get insignias). That means the money it took the purchase the ability to use custom insignias would go down the drain. That would help keep people in line.

Perhaps the Devs can institute a custom insignia designer program? With no outside uploads, the Devs could determine the content of custom insignia, and keep at least the offensive trolls at bay.

Now there's nothing to stop a unit from adopting a radical paint scheme (or at least I don't think there should be a restriction) like say neon pink or something, but at least it would keep trolls from putting a certain part of the male anatomy on thier mechs along with the words "Mine's bigger than yours!"

In case your wondering, yes, I did encounter such a person in a TT game. He had brought a custom drawn rendition of his mech, since he couldn't put it on the actual miniature. He was very proud of his work and more than just a little full of himself, as he casually insulted all the other players at the table before the game began. What I found really distrubing about the whole thing is that the person who brought the picture and was insulting everyone around him was only 12 years old.

Didn't MW4 have an option tab that allowed you to have custom decals displayed when playing online? If you didn't select that option then you wouldn't be able to see anybody's custom decals, or be offended by any decals. Might be an idea to have a selector switch on your menu to allow custom decals either on or off when playing online.

I loved running into a Sunder loaded with AC 20 and 10's only to read the little custom decal this one guy had... It simply said:

"If you can read this you made a grievous tactical error!"

We need to be able to report on it like you can report on bad emblems in CoD Black Ops.

I have three thoughts on this.

1. If there are never any "join-able" factions in house units, then the need for custom decals is less in my opinion. If there are multiple insignias for each house unit and decals for merc units to choose from, this may not be a huge issue. It depends on the "skins" available for the mechs, and how many decals there are to choose from.

2. Yes, you need to have thick skin to be able to deal with custom decals. In MW4 I loved customizing my mech with decals that took hours to make, but it was not a game breaker for me. NBT servers did not allow custom decals, I lived without it there and can live without it here. The "allow custom decals" button would help with that for people who cannot tolerate stupidity of some people.

3. Custom decals...sort of. So, if custom decals are a gamebreaker for most folks, lets think of the easiest way to make everyone happy.
The easiest way I know of would be to have a editor inside the main game. It would cost real money to use. The editor has sets of small squares to choose from, in many different colors. After a color is chosen, there is another layer. This layer has lines, crosses, shields, ect. The next layer has pictures commonly seen in mechwarrior of animals and objects like hammers, ect. If the Devs added enough selection per layer and 5 layers, you could have hundreds or thousands of combinations. While not perfectly custom, it is a custom decal that wont be offensive. Once the unit leader has designed the decal, he pays some $, and then the other people in that unit have the option to click a button on the decal and skins window to "Display Unit Decal". The right to display unit decals could even be a one time micro transaction, a one time $1 - $3 fee would not likely peeve anyone, and would generate some cash for PGI.

Just a thought. (Thanks Nakir)
We have moderators to keep us honest on the forums. Why not have volunteer people vent the insignia to remove the unexceptable?
Then send them on to the devs for aproval/ adding to the game.

Great point Larry, League of Legends has this in play whenever someone should be banned though I propose something different. If you make a unit you are appointed to a board of players who as a council rule on decisions affecting other players. This way it's like a Assembly and each person gets a voice. The devs bring up the issue to the unit leads and by way of a simple extra hidden forum vote on those matters at hand. As for topic relevance yes Custom decals should be implemented.

The problem i find with letting people do what they want, is really people will do what they want. If there is a board it should be large (so some jerks can't vote in stupid things for their friends) and probably anonymous, no-one but the Devs would know the people who are on it. It could be done as a poll as in "yea" or "nay".

I dont get why its hard at all. Charge money. Validate the payment source but do not charge, as you are GOING to charge pay some loser like me min wage to review and approve or deny the images, then charge if approved. Not rocket science at all.
