He never said he hated it, just not "obsessed" with it. The way I read it, is that he's just wondering if he needs in-depth knowledge of it to enjoy the game.

If it wasn't for the universe, MW:O would be 'just another game'.

As has been said, if you don't want to care about the universes history and the factions, you can play lone wolf or mercs.
But, should you choose to play in a house, it would be beneficial to read up what that faction is about before joining, lest you end up wondering "Why is everyone in my faction a madman/blakist spy/assault pilot/viking/samurai/whatever?"

OP, what exacly did you mean with the poll question? (i just noticed there was a poll)

bothered as in invested in, interested, care about?

or bothered as in irritated, annoyed or disturbed?

This. The poll couldn't be more ambiguous.

That's why I didn't answer it.

Poll needs to be amended to be more clear. American English and British/Australian/NZ English have more differences then you would think.

I think he means "Bothered" as in "Do you *CARE* about the lore?" But people answering the polls are reading as "are you *BOTHERED* [read: annoyed by, upset with] by the lore?"

I am a fan of the original release. no clan no upgrades, no double heat sinks. The citytech additions are ok, but even then I don't like the imbalance of the different auto cannons (bigger damage having shorter range). The original rules had the best balance. All the stuff added after that is just to feed the desire for "bigger and badder" mechs.

P.S. I know some of you are going to flame about the auto cannon statement, but if bigger explosives could penetrate armor better that a high velocity weapons the M1 Abrams wouldn't be firing a non explosive kinetic rounds at close to three times the speed of sound.
I have always accepted these cannons and their opposite of the laws of physics specs for the purpose of game balance.

I'm more trying to get at the fact that, personally, I'm more interested in the "in-game gameplay" rather than where the batte fits into the battletech universe.

so we have numerous mech art-hate threads
Melee hate threads
and now we have a completely Battletech Universe hate-thread?

Why do people even play these games if they don't like them so much? lol

I apologise if it came across as a "Battletech Universe Hate-thread", it's not, I love that there is a back story, but one so rich can be quite daunting to a newcomer.

The fact that there is a "lone-wolf" mode, is appealing to me, personally...

Very well, thanks for the clarification. And you're right, it is a looooot of info to absorb if you wanted to know the background. I probably own almost 100 books myself and I don't consider myself an expert at all.

Good luck to everyone who are new to the setting and are trying to learn.

I think you will find that the people who are upset that their favourite Clan mech will not be in the game soon enough or at all are most likely IS-oriented players. Clan-oriented players, the ones keen on the Lore aspect of the game, are more rational about things.

I suggest you play atleast Mechwarrior 4, it gives a bit of insight into the setting, plus I love the customization options and the campaign is also fun.

lol Thanks for the luck, been trying to absorb as much as I can. Reading my second book, and there's a whole lot of info spread throughout these forums. There obviously is no Crash Course, toooo much information! Doing my best though. As long as this wonderful community keeps contributing, there is hope. Posted Image

I have actually played Mechwarrior 4 on the PC, but like someone else mentioned, I just skipped to the battles/wars/engagements.

That's actually the whole reason I was/am so excited about the reboot as I played it while at university and I remember it being great (and not just as it was about the only game I was good at).

I think that as long as there is this "lone-wolf" mode, so I can drop in, play some games, and then come back in a few days and play some more, I'll be happy.

I have no doubt that once I get into the game, I will be wanting to know more and more about the lore, but initially, I'd like to just kill some big hunks of metal! please....

I'm a fan of the universe. The books got me into the board game got me into the video games. I don't know as much as some here, but enough to appreciate all the effort that the developers put into keeping true to the established lore.

Not knowing the 'history' will mean you don't get jokes on the forums about the characteristics/rivalries of various factions, but it's highly unlikely that you'd suffer any gameplay disadvantage. In the end, the game is not governed by anything other than its own rules, whether or not they accurately model the rules of the tabletop games or the universe described in the books. So welcome, have fun, and look at the whole backstory like it's bonus material there for your entertainment rather than some sort of barrier to enjoying the gameplay.

I've been involved in the universe since the beginning (Battledroids) and although the background is deep and involving it is not necessary to play a PC game. It may make it more enjoyable and involving, but at heart it's big robots blowing things up. Exactly how they do it - well thats why you get a lot of the, sometimes heated, discussion on the forums. In particular with regard to AC's . If you want to learn more there are plenty of links, and you might want to check out the fan art and fiction sections. It'll help give you an idea of just how varied the BTU is. If you decide to try some of the books, many are available electronically.
In the end tho' we'll all be starting anew when the game launcehes, so welcome to another chapter in the story.

What I don't' like, Jihad and after.

I would have been quite happy if they had just kept on beating on each other.

War of Reeving... I don't' have enough information.

The best way is to research the timeline and follow the books/TRO/lore in a line from the beginning. Take a look at the overall timeline, but Don't try to absorb the whole thing at once. Just take it one piece at a time. You'll get more of the feel for the universe. Some of us have been involved in the BT/MW universe for decades and still aren't experts. Rember that is how one eats an elephant - one bite at a time.

I think the best way to describe it is to compare it to Warhammer 40k. Shure you could play the game (that with the ultramarine smashing a million of orcs) without any knowledge of the lore. It would just be a game about smashing orcs for you.

But when you dig a little, read up a bit.. suddenly it becomes so much more. You understand why meeting that inquisitor is such a big deal, why you couldnt just jump into that titan an pilot it around...

The game is still the same.. but knowledge of the lore (from you) and adherence to it (from the devs) transforms it into something way beyond a simple shooting game for the hardcore fan audience.

I am new to the lore but not the game totally. I wish I could read up on the many aspects of the lore but its quite an impossibility now So I read what I can and hope to become a tad more intelligent on the subject before the game goes live.
