If the question could read as;

Do you bother with the lore? (aka, read, study, memorize, consider anything outside of it as not canon*, etc, or at the very least care that is being used as a base to tie together the premise of "walking tin cans beating on each other")

X - Yes

_ - No

As already stated; It adds deeper flavor to the game and can make one care whether a particular planet is in the hands of one House or another. Example; If DCMS is on a winning streak then FedCom better review it's tactics and go get some of those resource rich planets back.

Without lore why does anyone care whether a battle was lost or won. I suspect there are more than just a few here that, like me, want to play a game where the outcome of a battle means something in the grand scheme of things and not a game where the loot piñatas have simply been changed from daisy-picking ogres to entire planets.

* - Canon: (from wiipedia) In fiction, canon is the conceptual material accepted as "official" in a fictional universe's fan base.

Also, it's caNon, people, not caNNon. The latter goes "boom", the former shouldn't.

I still haven't voted, because the question itself hasn't been clarified.

I wish I could read up on the many aspects of the lore but its quite an impossibility now...
Why? The lore is everywhere across the internet, one simply needs to put in the right keywords, and the books are readily available through drivethrurpg.com and other places, in PDF, etc.

The battletech universe is what i got sucked into when i picked up my first book and when i played the tabletop game, the battletech universe is what Mechwarrior spawned from..where it took place, its where this game is taking place/going to take place. There's loads of places on the internet that can help people learn about the battletech universe, just takes a few clicks and very little effort.
Read some of the books, check out some websites..you'll see how rich the Lore is, how widespread the universe is and how it sucks you right in...dont be so quick to dismiss it everyone :ph34r:

I'd vote in the poll, but the question is so ambiguious, I don't know which option to vote for. Do you mean, "Are you bothered by the BT Universe," or "Do you bother with the BT Universe?"

As for the BT universe itself, I love it. Battletech wouldn't be Battletech without the warring factions, the political intrigue, and the personalities that drive both. While I would prefer the game to be set in the lull between the third and fourth succession war (aka classic Battletech, before the introduction of super Star League Technology), I can certainly understand why a lot of players prefer the Clan Invasion.

Yep, it would be just another robot game without the universe backdrop. The thing i like most about MWO is that they've set the timeline where they have. 3049 means us old tabletop battletech gamers can have the older mechs for a bit before the clans kick it all into high gear. We can have a nice little inter house war before having to join up to repel the invaders. A lot of the older designs didn't get much play in previous computer games and thats always bugged me, i like the newer designs too but i'd like to have a thunderbolt for a bit before considering trading for a thanatos.
