I for one will switch from the good 'ol kboard and mouse to the Razer Artemis which v2 last I heard is to come into the market at around $100. Almost what I payed for a top-notch mouse and that's only because I spend time in photoshop, illustrator and flash.
The razer artmeis roxors mah boxors!

Maybe mouse and key works better for some people, but I really like the joystick. It's a lot more intuitive to me.

The Artemis uses a modified version of the Nostromo, so you can get that functionality now for $70 without taking up your whole desk. Get used to having the lefthand command console, and when PGI finally fixes joystick support, throw on whatever right hand controller you want and you're .
I use the dpad for throttle up/down and turn left/right, blue mode for firing groups and targeting, red mode for toggling camera modes, battle grid, and power. Green mode has weapons grouping and assignment binds, chain fire toggle, and a UAC5 unjam macro.
Put up a vid of my setup..

In my 15 years of hardcore gaming, the Nostromo is far and away the single greatest gaming purchase I've made. I'm dead serious. The left side of the artemis isn't half as good as the nostromo. The Nostromo makes an expensive gaming mouse unnecessary, 5 button lasers are cheap now, and joysticks aren't as quick/accurate as a joystick. I really prefer the linear button layout and thumb features.
My nostromo setup:
Thumbpad = Feet omnidirectional movement (key was setting it to D-Pad)
Buttons:
Stop, Center Torso, weapon groups 1-5, Heat/thermal, Target, Display all known mechs, map, score, override, freelook, zoom, teamspeak
And the kicker is that you can have
