i was able to make money with the centurion (-A and -AL) before the patch. after the patch i had to switch to an XL-engine and that ferro-armor, now this thing makes me poor. it's ridiculous that a med-mech can't hold itself. even with a win i often just make ~10-20k but with a lose i have to pay ~60k

The repair cost is currently too high, it will be fixed tomorrow.

@Lunchie-i've been in the closed beta for a while now and come tomorrow i will be back to the trial mechs, the grind isn't really all that bad and it can have a positive side to it.
Decide what you want as your first chassis, that's your initial goal, and use the time spent reaching your C-bill goal as a learning curve.
Get good with your preferred trial mech, enjoy no repair bills and by the time you've acquired the C-bills you need, i'm betting your initial mech choice will have changed with the experience you have gained.
When you do go for your first custom mech, keep it simple, stay away from advanced equipment and don't pigeon hole your loadout.

or you can do what i did and use the scout trail mech to rush the enemy head on and die. once you get 2m, get a junky fast mech and do the same thing. 1-2m per hour, no effort, no skill, then just get whatever you want and play for real, (which earns a lot less, since you can't churn a new match every 3 minutes).

that was before the patch, but ideally, you'd put 0 armor in your center torso since that's where you get shot the most. it makes the games faster and keeps the repair bills way down.

Hey all

So I just started playing a couple days ago and something struck me. WOW... this game is very boring in the beginning.

Well...yeah. On the other hand you get to learn the various types of mechs out there and their strategies.
Perhaps the mech you wish to have is not as good as you thought it would be? Imagine that someone gave you one time opportunity to chose a mech. You pick the one you think will be a great mech and then you find out that its running costs are huge, it is horrible to play and there is no redeeming features in that mech. Wouldn't you be bit disappointed?

For a lifetime fan of the mech warrior franchise I just dont get why the game is SO SO slow to allow you to do or buy anything?

Short answer : to induce you to spend money. There are far, far worse f2p games out there in that regard (and I have tested fair share of them).
My advice to you - test out as many trial mechs you can (they change selection of them now and then). They are rather great for credit grind and will give you opportunity to test out a mech + different weapon systems.

Am I doing something wrong? why cant I play the game properly instead of constantly picking 1 of 4 mechs that seem to get their butts kicked by custom mechs and am I right in saying that if you dont have $ to spend then the only option is to save up the 1.7mil and start out in some tiny scout mech?

you aren't doing anything wrong, you have to realize that if you want to play for free than you're going to have to put in time as a temporary target. It will be repetitive, but look, the matches go by pretty fast. It isn't like you will spend 8 weeks grinding just to buy one mech. If you spend 10-15 hours playing Trial mechs, you will have about enough Cbills (around 5-6 million) to buy a light mech and equip it the way you want. 30-40 hours will get you enough to buy a well equipped medium mech and you'll have a lot of knowledge by that time. I'm guessing that most people will short cut it and buy MC, but if you're willing to be cannon fodder, you don't have to.

just like WoW and all the other MMO's....you guys are 50,000 strong and are going to eat us newbies alive and start adding to your kill score right from the start.

you should have made some kind of mini game (trainer) for constant DL. like with one or two mechs just for training. so we all could get some training in. it is my guess that this is going to be nothing like the MW/Mercenaries of the past, MW 3 and MW 4 don't hold a candle to this game.

F2P methodology is just like the pilots above have stated.....free to play or play to be better. The problem is the better (?) mech does not equate to better skill; then the question of whether you really like it or need to go play "A Dwarfs Life".

If you are an old Mechwarrior series fan then you can probably take the risk. Where your treasures lie so does your heart.

Seriously this is a game where I advocate you stick to trial mechs first before paying REAL cash for mechs. Because if you can't handle that class of mech, you will get torn open.
