I have always believed that PC monitors are better than TVs when it comes to gaming, hands down. I have known people who have replaced their large 50+plus screen HDTVs with smaller 20-30 inch HD PC Monitors. You'll find posts like this all over the MWO forums, all over youtube, and even during a simple google search if you type in "TVs vs PC Monitors"

But i have a theory that because of how TV technology has been developing the last couple of years, that it may be possible to get a 40+inch TV that is just as good as a Monitor if not better. My goal is to get a 40 inch TV(or Monitor) that can do HD, 3D(using active glasses).

I haven't found any PC monitors that get that big so i am forced to look at TVs. So for those of you who are well educated on this subject, i was wondering if you can help me put together a "list" of things that make a Monitor better than a TV in terms of gaming, specifically playing MWO in nothing less than a 1080p.

So far, what i already know what makes Monitors better than TVs is this:

-Refresh Rates
-Response Times(is this the same thing as refresh rates?) Edit: no, it's not. It's the time it takes pixels to go from grey to grey
-Color Depth(you can actually find monitors up to 30 bit now!)
-imput lag(what exactly causes this and how can i tell by checking out a TV if it'll produce imput lag?)

Note: I'll be "adding" stuff to this list using the "edit" feature whenever someone posts to this educating me on something that isn't on the list. Thanks in advance to all those who do. ;)

Am i missing anything?

I'm creating this post not just to educate myself on this issue, but because i'm on a mission to obtain a 40 to 42 inch screen(at least 40inch), whether it be a Monitor or TV, but with the best quality picture possible. Don't factor in budget when answering this post. I'm just focused on the technology, not the price because prices can always change, or there can always be an epic sale somewhere, especially with black Friday around the corner.

Response time is not the same thing as refresh rate. Response time is how long it takes to go from gray to gray. Also why using a PC monitor is better than TV is input lag. TVs usually have all kinds of pointless stuff going on background making the visuals better. Some TV models have "gaming mode" option to turn off this background stuff to reduce input lag. Input lag is how your monitor responses to your input. Input lag causes firing delay and mouse lag.

EDIT:
Also if I ever went over 22" on a PC monitor, I'd choose a monitor that would support 2560x1600 or 2560x1400 resolution. 1080p HD is already a thing of the old days. Modern GPUs render higher resolutions relatively faster than smaller due to technicalities.

hello, on the same time, a resolution more then 1920x1080 is more expensive and find it is not very easy

if you look on the market, the cheaper monitor on 27" are all on 1920x1080 .... and so the tv are too

for the rest, you are right that a tv screen with game mode are on 10-15 ms Response Times, that's enough for game (hardcore gamer say not but for a normal gamer it's enough ^^)

so the problem for tv is the 3D, that's not decoded the same from monitor pc ... and that's the only big problem to choice a tv screen for game on 3D ... you need to find a tv that have a real input on 120 Hz min for do a 60 fps max on 3D ... if not you risk to game on 24 fps on 3D ...

So...would this be the best solution then? I plan on getting a 19inch monitor(they're dirt cheap now) when i finish building my PC and will be using that till i have enough saved up for this TV.

It seems like Nvidia supports some 3d TVs with some software.
http://www.nvidia.co...y-overview.html

I haven't had a chance to try this because my pc is just way too heavy to drag downstairs to connect to my 3d TV.

I do have this 3d monitor. I hardly ever use the 3d functions outside of watching movies from time to time because 3d just didn't seem to be implemented very well in many games.

I'm not sure about all the specs, but I have been playing with my Samsung UA60ES8000 and have contemplated using this as my PC monitor for MWO.

I've just bought Avatar 3D (which only came out last week on 3D here in Australia) and it was flawless. If my computer can run games as fluently through the TV as my blu-ray does then this will definitely be just as useful as a monitor.

If the numbers don't seem as good, I can pretty much guarantee that you won't be able to see the difference unless you're moving at the speed of superman :P

Currently running three Samsung 24's and spanning using nVidia surround and its butter. I think the PC monitors are the way to go though as the HD TV's are going to cost more and the performance is not worth the cost. Don't buy absolute crap monitors either but there is no need to get uber top of the line monitors on the flip side of that statement.

yeps but dont forget that's the 3d movie dont use the same way to do from 3D game

you realy need a tv 120 Hz capacity to have the same work from pc monitor 120 Hz for 3D

if you dont use 3D, all tv LCD are ok
