In a few hours, a lot- and I mean a lot of you will be engaging on the field for the first time.

I'll -assume- you read this thread FIRST when access to the beta forums is opened.

http://mwomercs.com/...mandatory-read/

But this is the big tip that isn't on there.

Don't fight alone. Don't fight alone. And don't fight alone.

Don't let the light 'Mech tempt you away from your fellows. He is luring you to your death in a hail of fire from his buddies. They know the idea of an "easy" kill is irresistible...but the scout is not an easy kill by any means. Your lasers will only glancingly hit, ballistics and most missiles are difficult at best to land on one, and only Streaks are good odds of nailing one- and even then only if he's not in close and circling. Let your lights chase theirs, and take your shots on one only if it's distracted. He loves 'Mechs that are far from help, who hang back too far or chase him out where he can chew them to bits unmolested.

Shoot the target the guy in front of you is shooting. Spreading your fire means at the end you've maimed seven 'Mechs and killed one- and they've killed all eight of yours. I watch this happen constantly- 'Mechs one hit from dropping getting to shoot unmolested and gunning down target after target because the other team decided to duel 1v1 while the enemy was shooting two, three, four 'Mechs into one target at a time. While you're at it, makes sure you actually lock a target with the R key when you're shooting at it. Seeing where they're damaged = killing them even faster.

If you DO find yourself out of reach due to distraction, make it a priority to find and help the remainder of your unit. Everyone gets tunnel vision. Don't let it be fatal.

And last, MWO beta users have been good about making voice chat networks to play together on- C3, Teamspeak, Mumble, etc. etc. Many of these are quite happy to have someone show up, join in, and have fun together. Voice chat MASSIVELY improves group play and whether it's a random bunch of players or a unit/clan/corp/flock of Tetatae, these "premades" have a win rate against non-grouped players that easily exceeds 90% of their matches, and more often 99%. You WANT to be in one of these groups.

http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/

Winning in MWO is about learning to pay attention to and assisting your unit. Simply letting the game drop you into random groups for matches puts you in the worst possible position for playing the game, where your team will be disorganized, random, and frankly dumber than rocks without good communication (read: voice chat). In fact, it will be outright painful compared to what grouping on a voice chat results in.

This can be actually turned the other way around: It's not because you have a light mech and can run at 100+Km/h that you always must be at full speed and run straight forward to your doom

you can stay close to your teammates at reduced speed until the combat starts, then you can annoy the **** out of every heavy mech support heavier friendly 'mechs. :P

Couldn't agree more.. keep this post alive!

also, today I submitted a ticket for the creation of a "do you know" like help for new players, with critical messages being displayed during map loads.. such as "do you know you can group your weapon?..." "do you know that you'll overheat if you alpha-strike everything?"... "are you f*****g pressing R to mark your target"

If you think that's a good idea to give new player some good tips to start in the right way, just make the devs know! :P

The trainging ground could be good, but I'm thinking that, as I did, 99% of players will just rush in the battle without reading a single line post in the site :)

STICK TOGETHER!

Unless it's your job to be the distraction, of course. My best performances have been when I sneaked into an enemy base and evasion tanked 3 guys while my team was fighting it out 7 VS 5 out there.

I don't know why, but people always go for the hardest-to-hit, least dangerous mech instead of attacking the easy-to-hit mechs with tons of dangerous weaponry. If they're going to be that stupid, I don't see why I shouldn't take advantage.

You are right, but these are tactics you can use when you are a bit more experienced.. for a newbie it's just almost certain death

No better advice will you find in these forums. I had to learn the hard way. I'm a 25+ year veteran of TT BT/MW, 35+ year war-gamer, thoroughly experienced in TT and computer tactics, no slouch at any form of these hobbies. But despite long experience, I have a tendency, nearly a need, to go off on my own vector, guard the unexpected pass, infiltrate from a surprise direction...and in MWO more than any title I've played, I pay for it 80% of the time, with an early doom.

Stay With Your Lance. Stay at least with one member, but far better at least a lance. Experienced light pilots can infiltrate alone when their actions are coordinated with the lance or company, but heavier mechs need their backs covered and the benefit of coordinated target choice and consolidated fire.

Stay With Your Lance. Two of you may be on a hill providing fire support while the other two are 600m ahead pulling targets into the beaten zone, but when coordinated with each other, having each other's backs, you'll survive the counter-attack.

Don't Fight Alone. If you have a lone-wolf need in game, suppress it. Your company needs you alive, needs your mech in the fight, and the way to ensure that is...____ _____ _____

Everyone repeat after the OP, loud and often.
