Is there a good reason for global chat? Is it in there for some specific purpose? It seems to be unmoderated, allowing anyone to type what ever they want in a match.

Team chat makes sense, of course, but global chat during a match should probably be done away with.

Not quite true - some of us like to chat back and forth while waiting for the match to end (although less so now that we're seeing players we know less often as the numbers increase) but also we like to congratulate the other team when a game is fought well.

Of course, you get some idiots who abuse it, but usually it's only used for fun, not to be nasty.

You don't like calling for an enemy to surrender each and every match? We do that in tabletop.

I think it leaves the door open to abuse, apart from the odd person saying "gg" or a longer variation that's about the only benefit, so far most people seem polite who use it, of course, so far, most people don't even know how to use it.....

How would Goonsquad yell "CAW CAW" with no global chat? I like to know when my team is crashing a group of goons... ;)

its mostly there for you to mock how bad your team is doing

or for you to ask general questions of everyone. every game i've ever played that had teams had a team and a global chat, seems like a weird thing for you to ask about

Two opposing armies being able to communicate back and forth goes back ages.

Whether used to cordially discuss terms before or after, or for one army to lob insults and foul language at the other, it is just a natural thing.

Blocking our ability to even speak to the opposing team is just silly.

Just report those abusing it.

Yes I've used the assumption that a premade will think I'm a new player and purposely gave them bad info a few time to good effect. You make it seem like you accidentally said the right side is clear in global chat when everyone is going left, etc. It's a mindbender for the other team, because they don't know if you know they know you are full of BS or not.

It is also useful when someone one types in "how do I (fill in the blank.." tho help out the new players.

Maybe in the future they will add a selectable filter so you can turn off the profanity that some need feel the need to use.

I scream like, well, ok, I use salty language on COMMS where the audience is a select few, not on Global chat where Bill's 10 yr old can see it...

It that a simple matter? Just type /report and instantly the chat log is rolled up and the offensive language, racist or derogatory comments are sent to the devs and the problem taken care of?

League of Legends realized late that any benefit gained by having all chat on by default is vastly outweighed by how toxic people can be on the internet.

Make the game default to having both outgoing and incoming all chat to off. Then only those people who like to pointlessly bicker with the enemy team mid match will turn it on.

With internet anonymity, it's important to make sure that anonymity doesn't easily combine with a voice.

Well sort of. Its not instant, but they will and do track reports of abuse. PGI will handle the issue between themselves and the possible perp. They, MUCH more than us, want this game to be a success and are not very tolerant of abuses or racist remarks either in the forums or in game chat, especially Global chat.

If you run into an issue. write down what was said (written) your time (including time zone), map played and the offending players name. Send in a report ticket or email. The support staff will usually notify you within 24 hours that they received your report. They are pretty responsive, or always have been for me for game issues during Beta.

My whole time in beta there has been no abuse going on with it. I've seen it used for the following purposes:

a ) pre-game well wishes and end-game congrats
b ) minor amount of posturing at start, and sometimes later
c ) general questions
d ) sometimes some running commentary
e ) negotiating terms of surrender
f ) personal challenge

And keep in mind, in the Battletech universe mech radios can indeed broadcast on open channels. This should remain in MWO.

I use it to relay my strategy to the enemy if I'm in a group, I really do this a lot, and to help out others. Screenshot the tools that like to abuse it and report them.
