Even though man people say Mechassault was bad, it did how every go a great job for weight class selection for multi-player
You all need to remember, this game is not going to be the sniper fest as they want focus on urban combat.
Medium to heavy mech can not turn their torso around quicker then a light mech can run around it.

There's your "trainer". Though I'd just be fine with light 'Mechs and some nice low-end starting missions...maybe even a few that just involve a "patrol" that get you used to maneuvering through terrain, jump jets, and so on.

According to Canon there should be the following numbers of mechs in each weight class available at the time the game is due to be set.
As you can see there are approximately equal numbers of each weight class (light/medium/heavy/assault)
7 x 20 tons
4 x 25 tons
8 x 30 tons
11 x 35 tons - total 30
mediums
10 x 40 tons
8 x 45 tons
9 x 50 tons
10 x 55 tons - total 37
Heavies
11 x 60 tons
11 x 65 tons
9 x 70 tons
6 x 75 tons - total 37
Assualts
9 x 80 tons
7 x 85 tons
7 x 90 tons
2 x 95 tons
11 x 100 tons - total 36

My suggestion for starting mech is that during your character generation you specify which class you will start with. You then get to choose one mech that your house makes from the list available. So 20 tons lights ... 40 ton mediums ... 60 ton heavies ... and 80 ton Assaults.
You can then work to change which mechs you have access to through two paths ... earning the c-bills to buy the next mech of your weight band. (another 20ton/40 ton/ 60 ton/ 80 ton) or you gain in experience until you unlock the next weight band (25/45/65/85) which then gives you the chance to buy a mech from your house mechs of that band.
A third option for jumping to another house's 'stable' of mechs would be through combat victories. if a fed com pilot kills 'X' number of dragon mechs (A kurita Mech) then he will gain the chance to buy that mech at a HUGE price. Kill 'x' more dragons and the price comes down steadily. Note though that this would not give you access to the whole Kurita line of mechs. Just the Dragon.

i dont see kurita's beloved jenner's as a starting mech, handed out to one and all...
your first assignments likely to be a 60 year old locust held together with duct tape
mind you, having said that....who's to say that your first mech wont be a bog standard grotty medium mech... and that light , heavy and assault are specializations you take after basic <medium mech> training?

Sixty years old would be brank spankin' new in 3025, and not much older in 3049. Still, if we could avoid having the beginning "everyone on the field is in a Locust" paradigm, it'd be wonderful.

If they restricted starting Mech's to House specific I would be fine with that. If you play a Merc they should have access to any weight class they can afford or are being supplied by the employer (House or otherwise). If they restricted by weight class then that would be disappointing to me, mainly because I have always been an Assault Mech (AM) specialist. That being said I don't mind playing other roles/weight classes, just not as much. I have no problems with potential costs to maintain being higher, that's par for the course with that chassis.
And agreed, people coming later into the game should not be disadvantage by weight class restrictions. Also ensures that if you need a X role you have players who can do so, rather than have a void. And I really don't think everyone will go for AM's. Looking at another related thread the mediums look the most popular, followed by lights.

from the old 3065 sim site, I'll tell you that Panther Packs are scary. 12 Panthers can kill a lance of atlases.
