It doesn't need to be in at launch though. Perhaps two or three months down the road, it would be nice. Most of it will depend on the matchmaking process...so many things seem to depend on that, don't it? Anyway, For it, but not right now. Concentrate on the game first.

I have been playing DDO for 6 years, great VOIP. As for spammers/griefers/irritating 12 year olds, there is a function /squelch <playername>. So it is quite easy to eliminate that iritation.

I`d rather see them doing what THEY do best. Make their game awesome.
Question. Would you go to a game dev to make an awesome voice app? No... of course not. They make GAMES. Just like I wouldn`t go to TeamSpeaks devs and as them to make Mechwarrior. Makes sense to me.

And EVERY time I *have* used vox comms, it's been a 3rd party application/server, and only once was it on a server I was informed of before gameplay started - it's really not that hard to get & setup a vent server on the fly, lone wolves.
This said, I probably WILL be putting on the headphones for this, as I'm in an existing 'clan' from back in MW4 days, and they *still* have several vent & TS servers already set up...I'm totally looking forward to our best player having nothing but static come through his mic, as always...

I rarely use vox comms, but I have Ventrillo, Teamspeak AND Skype installed on my computer and can quickly get things set up in any; do you also want someone to hold your hand and tell you how to torso-twist?

Text chat has worked in every other MW game to date, and this time commanders will make it even eaiser, VoIP for random pub matches is not needed.

About what I expected to see....
I personally think the root of this problem is the role "Lone Wolf" - should have never been allowed. It's causing problems now and it will get worse later. Join a House or Merc Corp... That's it.... But hey, that my opinion....

Also, there can be one-click-solutions for mute/kick, that's no real point!

3rd party solutions won't suffice here. Let's have an example. You are "Pink Pony Lanciers XY", a group of let's say 15 players from 5 different time zones. Pink 1 has a job that takes his daytime, Pink 2-8 are at college/university/school and the rest have jobs with different shifts. Now tell me, how do you come together to play more often than once a week? If you are able to scratch up a whole lance, and be lucky enough to join the same game, how will you communicate in a proper way with the commander and the other lances? There are at least 4 different 3rd party VOIPs out there, you have to pay for a server and nobody else will ever be willing to let you join on theirs.
There is a real need for an ingame solution. Textchat will never suffice, and commo rose, let's be honest, it's only there for spamming, nobody's ever listening to that.

3rd Party solutions have sufficed for every MW game to date, and every other online game to date they WILL suffice here, you do not have to pay for a server, infact its really simple to host your own.
Text chat has always sufficed because of its split functions global and team chat.
Adding VOIP solves nothing when half the community will automatically mute it and not use it.
It's already been said the commander role will be able to issue orders, no VOIP needed.

The arguments I've mainly heard AGAINST voice comms are one of two things.
1. The kiddies will just spam the voice chat.
Well, we're the die hard community on here and how much random spamming have we heard? The simple fact that this isn't just another FPS with a more detailed control system somewhere between fps and flight sim means that a more mature minded player is the audience for it. Combine this with the ability to mute individuals and I don't see this being a problem.
2. I use a 3rd party application so I don't need it.
Fair enough, you're all sorted. The problem here lies with the more casual player, the new guys who're just turning up or will want to try it in the future. And what about the guys who want a game at a time when the majority of their guild is online. All of us have joined guilds on here and want to play competitively but there's games I play and play to win without wanting to devote my life to them, I can only assume you guys do the same.
Voice comms aren't just a nice to have, They're a must have.
I've been playing tribes ascend since the closed beta came out, I played tribes 2 before that. the shortcut voice commands are amazingly useful, but there's times when you need to convey something quickly that just isn't on there. VWE shouts incoming hostiles but won't let me tell the rest of the team there are cloaked hostiles in the base and btw what a lovely target I make while I type this. Defend The Generator will either be ignored by people concentrating on the flag, bring in people who won't know what to expect or bring a large number of people in and leave us exposed. I've been desperate for voice comms in that game but at the same time known a lot of people would just spam it or use it for chat because they already do that with text chat in some games.
I know that TeamSpeak can be integrated into games and would suggest this as a way to get VOIP into the game. It could be set up with a couple of channels so you could have Team Voice and a separate channel for your personal Guild Chat. This would be in the options tab in the menu you hit by pressing escape and details could be sent by text chat if you want to invite people to your server and in competitive play would allow for an overall broadcast system to report team wide and if you have the server allow each lance to have their own channel for things that don't need to be broadcast higher up.
These are just my thoughts, I strongly believe in a role-specific, tactical and above all team-based game like this effective communications will be the key to victory and no one will enjoy a game they try out where they start with a clear and massive disadvantage.
constructive criticism always welcome, especially seeing as this is just off the cuff.

Let me add a couple more:
3. Designing and developing a VOIP for a game takes time and resources from the game - time and resources that can be better spent elswhere. I.E: Testing, models, maps, MechLab features, variants, balance, etc...
4. No built-in VOIP can be easily fixed by the far superior third-party VOIP programs that can be used instead - like Ventrillo, Mumble, TS3, Skype, etc. There will be no third-party fixes for missing features like maps or BattleMechs, now is there?
So no, in my opinion built-in VOIP is not needed whatsoever.

No Mic/no sound, no need for VOIP either...
