Can anyone who uses this post a BEFORE and AFTER picture, please?

Played more than 300 matches without even noticing the game has film grain. :)

I, too, have played a lot of games and have no idea what you guys are talking about. Can someone post either pictures or video showing the difference? Thanks!

I had no idea what they were talking about either. Then I replaced my 19" CRT monitor with a 22" LCD wide screen monitor. I run the game at lower resolutions (old vid card) and I can just barely see the grain effect, mainly in the sky. I guess at the highest resolutions it gets more apparent.

Because the old thread is currently lost in the Beta Forums and I don't know the link to the download, I am uploading and rewriting the guide.

(Originally made by L etranger.)

Step 1.

Download the .zip file from this link: http://www.mediafire...shak4ubg7rz3g7s

Step 2.

Open it in your favorite file extractor: (Windows .zip, WinRAR, 7zip, etc.)

Step 3.

Extract the "Engine" folder to your MWO folder.

Step 4.

Merge it with the "Engine" folder already in there.

Step 5.

Enjoy MWO without the Film Grain!

Checking on this. I don't have a merge option so I just extracted it hopefully it works...

EDIT- Since I don't have the merge option is seems I'm stuck with the grain :)

All you have to do is copy the EngineAssets folder into the Engine folder. There aren't any files that are overwritten.

It's just as bad as I remember from way back in Closed Beta where I last set my eyes upon it. I detest it's very existence.

Thanks for the reminder. I moved to a new machine several months ago and did not take this fix with me.

After the latest Patch from 2.9. the "modability" was removed and will not come back.
Any .xml edits or file replacements will not work anymore.

While the above language is a bit strong for me, I wish PGI (etc) would give a ruling on this. Frankly the film grain spoils a good looking game for me BUT I am not willing to risk cheating just to get rid of it.

Does anyone know if the film grain filter could be construed as against the T&C for "using a mod to provide tactical advantage) It does help you see stuff at slightly longer ranges from what I have seen.

I did get personal feed back about SweetFX when I asked (Tl:dr version is "If you use it don't come to us if it breaks the Game for you - we won't support it") But this filter wasn't mentioned in that as I didn't know about it at that time.

Hey I know! Drop film Grain for 1pv but give it back for 3pv..... (Ow, ouch no stop hitting me I was kidding!!)

They didn't seem to care about Film Grain removal overrides in general. In fact they temporarily blocked one thread that I know of due to SweetFX inclusion, and restored it after being removed. Film Grain was also prominently featured in that thread, and it remained so after being restored.

Film Grain is gimmick, that really isn't needed on PC games. All it does for me is make the game look hazy & strain my eyes.

I've posted a suggestion thread about it in my sig. I really want more specific control over my graphics setting within PGI's allowed settings.

EDIT:

Really, removing Film Grain is a cheat? All I know is that I was playing a fantastic looking game before September 3rd. Now it's just a muddy mess. ;)

So I'm posting in every single on of these threads that isn't locked.

Please remove this stupid filter that removes clarity on an otherwise very good looking game. Also, it sucks.

As an older gamer (as indicated by my moniker), this feature needs to be an option or at least severely curtailed. My eyes aren't as sharp as they once were, and the "grain" tends to cut down on overall contrast and focus, making it very difficult, and sometimes downright impossible, to see anything at even a moderate distance. Turning up the gamma in the options has helped some, but as a concept it really needs to be seriously reconsidered and re-tooled.

It's presence doesn't even make much sense from a lore perspective (and I'm not even remotely a lore monkey here, just thinking logically is all.) At the time where the game is set, "film" as a photographic medium would be as antiquated a notion as the horse-and-buggy or rubbing two sticks together. It's an anachronism that simply doesn't belong.

Grain is great feature, it is improving retention rate and yada yada yada. If you don't like this you must be on The island.
/sarcasm

Seriously it is cheap graphical effect used to hide bad graphics, it causes only frustration. We don't need it.
