After OB reset I used my Founder's Cat long enough to fund my Dragon. Now that I have my 1N I rarely pilot anything else. Absolutely love the Dragon.

People who think it's useless are the ones with the DPS-above-all mindset. A Dragon doesn't cause damage. That's not it's job. Use it as intended and it's an awesome mech. It has the firepower to kill anything smaller than it and the speed to outrun anything it can't kill. It also has a better field of fire for it's primaries than most other mechs.

I've seen lance mates do outstanding in the Dragons, but personally i didn't do so well i'll have to admit. Not my playstyle i guess. Still mad jelly of its speed...

Also, when comparing mech variants like trial vs custom you have to compare them on even footing - ie. pilot skill-neutral. It's just common sense.

... Or just carry on advertising your incredible revelation: 'good pilots can do well in bad mech variants'!!! zomg

I'm not sure if anyone has brought this up or not,i read the first couple pages and then just kinda hopped to the end.Are the trial mechs viable? sure. Can you kill stuff with them? sure.Hell,I could put a small laser on a commando,with nothing else,and eventually I'm gonna kill someone with it.Doesn't mean it's good.

The real problem with trial mechs is they are the new user experience.Not rather or not we consider them "viable".Just because a veteran pilot can have a modicum of success with one does not mean they are worth a damn,or more importantly, fun for a new player.As a matter of fact I'm sure they suck donkey *********.How much fun do you think a new player will have over heating after firing 3 times and shutting down while he gets his face ripped off by custom,finely tuned mechs? Not much at all i'd imagine.No fun = no money in PGI's pocket = no game for us to play.

the Trial dragon in my opinion is the best of the Trial mechs. After that, the 1N is easily still my favorite of my mech variants. It's so versatile. my 1C and 5N have their respective places too, but in terms of a little bit of spice everywhere goes my 1N is my fave mech in the whole game.

It's not that trial mechs are good, it's that dragons are better :)

Seriously though, the only issue with any trial mech is learning curve. They all have enough heat sinks to completely use up all their ammo and do huge damage via attrition over a decent length of game.

It's more about knowing to use up all but 2-3 shots of your LRM at the start, then most of your AC5 / ballistics before finally going in and polishing off the remains with your lasers. All trial mechs operate in a similar fashion - expend your expendables, go in for the kill.

The biggest problem is more that the average game doesn't allow for any real tactics due to lack of general team play, or that the enemy is organised enough they don't give you time to learn / play in an appropriate manner. The game timer goes for 15 mins, but the average game length is closer to 5-10 at most. Many games are over in the first 5 mins. So you end up training people to play by rushing headlong towards the enemy due to games feeling so rushed.

I think that is actually the biggest issue with a trial mech - they are designed to last 10-15 minutes but are dead in the first 5.
