I love mechwarrior. I have played MW 3, MW 4: vengeance, MW 4: Mercenaries, and Mechcommander 2, and so naturally I am excited to play this game. But I'm a big softy, and don't handle competitive multiplayer games well. In single player game such as those listed (and thoroughly enjoyed) above, if you lose you can always set the difficulty down, or restart the mission. There is no malice in the game, just programmed enemies, but in multiplayer games there IS malice, there IS hatred! Hell if you're a noob your own team will get angry at you for playing poorly. It seems like there's a whole lot more at stake with competitive games such as these, or at least that's how people act. So I tend to shy away from non-cooperative multiplayer titles.

I want to play this because it IS mechwarrior, and mechwarrior is simply badass. But I'm scared of jumping into a random game. Are there any friendly groups of mechwarriors who would take a longtime MW fan under their guidance? My online group of friends play, but I never got into closed beta, so I feel like I would weigh the group down.

Head on over to www.the-bwc.com - we do teach you how to play the game.

Wou'll be hard pressed to find a better group of people.

Except, granted, for the next five guys who post. I think most of the groups playing this are very mature individuals. But really, BWC all the way - you won't be disappointed.

And bring your friends.

Also, there's a more appropriate forum for posts like these:

Merc Corp Recruiting <- great place to look... and in my experience... lots of great groups out there (Deaths Hand Brigade being one... hint hint... ) that have a place for players of all levels... from hard-core to extreme casual...

As to your group of online friends that play... if they're really your friends... they should welcome you in and show you the ropes...

Good luck to you Piemaster!!

As a veteran of MPBT Solaris back in 96, I can vouch for the fact things have changed. People are extremely competetive now past the point of bad conduct. I was a kid back in 96 and we never would treat people with the disrespect that I have seen daily in battles. The cursing, Alt+F4'ing, griefing, and denegration of players seems to be here just like World of Tanks and yes you're right PiemasterXL. I think alot of it comes from this being a competetive match based game. Kill/Death ratio is God to some people. I'm hoping the addition of Community Warfare and unit formation may give the bad seeds some guidance and change for the better.

Been wanting to say this for a while, seemed like a good time.

I encourage you to watch the official training video here http://mwomercs.com/...raining-grounds

Scan the forums for some 'new player tips' or 'new pilot guides'

Hop on the unofficial TS channels and look for a training room, lots of helpful players around.

The most important tip: don't be disheartened by the steep learning curve. you can pilot trial mechs which have no repair cost, you can get blown away by skilled opponents and learn from it, letting you walk away a better pilot with each defeat (or victory!) you rack up. Stick with it, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

complaints = bad, questions = good

The OP says "malice"... I hear "un-sportsmanship" and "douche-baggery."

Really, if you're EXPECTING that kind of behavior, then you're expecting the minority. Almost all of the people I've encountered playing this game are actually pretty friendly. There are a few a$$holes for sure, but you gotta remember just that - they're a$$holes, and thus safely ignored (a lesson you can teach yourself in this game that'll benefit you in everyday life).

It'll take you a while to get good at this game. Expect to die a lot. Also, expect to have fun trying. And give exactly zero shytz if people pyss you off - that is the correct solution to that particular problem.

If you're current or former military IRL, our corps is recruiting. We're "for-fun" players, more or less the Animal House of the mercenary corps. We win a lot, but we also drink a lot and some of us can swear for ninety seconds straight without repeating a word. . . and do, in the middle of a pitched battle. But we're easy on our noobs. We even go easy on obvious noobs on other teams.

The OP and I are in the same boat: I was terrified of this game as well. Not only because I usually played single player games like Mechcommander, but because I am terrible at first person shooters. But after many deaths (my record isn't too good and I don't really care) I'm learning the ropes. People weren't frustrated when I asked for help and now my Catapult contributes to a game instead of being a target that can't fight back.

Perhaps I'm lucky or perhaps i'm not playing enough games, but I have seen very little of the verbal noob bashing I keep reading about. According to my stats I have played in 48 games some in pugs some in teamspeak. Of those games I have seen people be rude twice that I can recall. I have seen people answer questions with positive answers much more often than that. Pretty much whenever they are asked. I have had a very positive experience with this community and I think that most people have a desire to be helpful.

In fact, while playing on teamspeak someone joined our group and admitted to being new to the game and we had to take turns in answering questions so that we weren't talking over one another. For a minute I thought our over-eagerness to teach the new player would drive them away. lol.

If you are a new player out there and want to learn contact me and i'll be happy to teach you whatever I can.

I have been playing MechWarrior for over 15 years -- not BattleTech, I mean the video game in all its iterations. And I had the town high score at BattleZone long before any of that. I thought pretty highly of myself as a 'mech pilot until I got into MWO. I still die a lot. But it is fun. Man, is it fun.

I hear both of you, PiemasterXL and Alalcomenous. I was initially hesitant when I heard the game would become an MMO as opposed to a single player game. I rarely played (and still rarely play) MMOs for multiple reasons, but I was really looking forward to playing a modern day MechWarrior game.

That being said, most people are fair and willing to help out others. A lot of what has been said so far is a testament to that.

And lastly, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm sure your friends would have been/would be more than willing to help get your feet wet while getting in some games with their new MWO ally.

This guy gets it

By that i mean the griefing and such... Example: I usually play jenner. I usually do very good, I've even gone as far as getting 5 kills and doing 1k damage in a single match with 6 small pulses (thats 55+ hits if i alpha striked every time) and i tend to run light armor on my legs, arms, and back... i hopped in a random and started to redo my weapon grouping and some Donner1 ran me over and took off just about all the armor on my Lleg my Back CT and Rarm i said "hey man thanks for taking all my armor off" he looked at me and just kept going i got pissed an tapped him with one small pulse for 1/2 the duration for about 1.5 damage... he responded be lableing me a "teamkiller" he then alpha-ed me for 20+ damage and his buddies Donner2, frat-somthing and another guy blew me to pieces and keep doing so to this day every time im on thier team even thoug i dont retaliate

So far I have found the people in the matches are pretty polite verbally. I have even had opponents point out something I am doing wrong like firing long range missiles at a target within minimum range. Yes mechs will gang up on you to take you down, but thats part of the game. We are all trying to kill each other after all.

I am sure there are trolls out there, but overall people seem pretty mature. I personally hate PvP in MMOs for the very reasons you stated. Battletech was always a tabletop strategy game where real people play against real people, so PvP matches are kind of what it's been about for 25+ years. The game does have a pretty big learning curve, and it took quite a few matches before I had even basic proficiency. The game seriously needs a training simulator.

I have yet to fall off the horse and not want to get right back on though. It's a lot of fun.

I have played my fair share of multiplayer pvp games. Never once have witnessed the kindness and generosity of this community. Now that could be because of my choice of games in the past, and never really strayed to far from the FPS genre. I did start playing chromehounds rater late in its life and I found those folks to be a mean, hateful bunch. There have been very few games of MWO that I have seen any rudeness at all. OP, even if you don't find a group to play with, give the game a shot. These people are great.

I thank you MWO Community, I love you all.

This is a pretty civilized group of players. There's a lot of joking around and camaraderie, even with opposing teams. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. There are jerky people, of course, but very, very, few of them. I report people who cross the line with abusive behavior. Since beta went open, I've played pick up games 12-16 hours a day. In that time, I've filed one complaint about anyone with customer service. Pretty astonishing for a competitive online game. It's not noticeably different than it was in the old days, playing Battletech with random people at gaming conventions.

That's probably the crux of it right there. This game from its very inception apeals to the very same groups of people who went to those conventions. I'd be interested to know how the community compares to D&D online? Ive never played that, but it should attract the same types of people.
