Trading who is taking damage while closing has been the best way I have yet seen to close and kill them.

There are a few ways to do this, but basically one guy goes out to get targeted and once the missiles are flying, he ducks under cover. Meanwhile, 2 or 3 others are crossing to the next available cover, then another guy gets targeted, rinse, repeat. Practice at pulling LRM's into terrain if you want to get good at this.

Forest Colony

Whichever side you start on, if you stay along the ridge side, there is plenty of cover. Send the bulk of your group through the far path or even the cave, while scouts stick to cover either on the water's edge, or using the large island 'towers' for their cover. Scouts harass them if they can, or else poke out long enough to get targeted and fired on then duck back to cover. A fast medium can actually do that role better; they may opt not to shoot at a scout, and the medium can take a bit more punishment. Just make sure you practice pulling LRM's into cover.

If you start on the high side, you can use the water route - but probably only if the other team is either LRM heavy and not very good, or if they are LRM light and taking the covered route. From the high side, it is most advised to use either the cave or the hills and covered paths just next to the cave. Stick as close to the left wall as you can, when making the move into the archway / bridge area, and again you have cover through to the arch and some from LRM boats that are closest to the water, if any.

Caustic

The 3-line offers plenty of cover from LRM's, and you can use the terrain around the caldera for cover. Just make sure you aren't the guy on top of the hill, for the most part. And don't crest ridges alone and unscouted - make sure they have more than one target. This works best if you have your target before cresting. You always want to be the first group that is firing at the one guy, not the guy being fired at by the whole other group :D

Fast mechs can circle around many hills and use the folds to bob up and down, break LOS, power down if needed, etc.

Frozen City

Oh god. So much cover here. However I believe there is a bug, that seems worse on Frozen City, where LRM's fly through buildings and hit anyway. This does not always happen to me, but often enough to be noticed and irritating ;) It usually only happens if I have just recently moved into cover. I'm thinking just part of hit detection issues - my client shows me safely behind a building, theirs shows me glitching in the open or whatever, and it registers server side and thus animates the hit on my client.

River City

This map is fairly unfriendly to LRM boats. Again, some missiles through buildings, but for the most part, just keep a nice, tall building nearby to duck behind. Use a circuitous path and weave about in the city areas. If you have to fight or cross in the water, either do so quickly, or keep their LRM boats opposite the citadel (the large building with the ramps between both bases) from you, or use bridges and overhangs for protection.

---

Note that a skilled team can and will adapt to the route you choose, and a good LRM pilot knows where to be to hit most places on the map once they know where you are heading.

So another tactic is... try not to let them know where you are heading. Kill scout(s) first - kill, not chase - then move in unscouted. Killing the scout without exposing yourself to LRM fire is not trivial, but it is possible - just remember to kill the squirrel or at least run him off for a moment, do not chase the squirrel as that is exactly what the squirrel wants you to do.
