I been doing some thinking (just a bit) on trial mechs and whether or not they are a significant contributor to unbalanced games.

Stay with me for a sec. since the matchmaker currently only counts mech class when matching teams, it seems that the trial mechs are worse than they should be.

look at it like this:
Trial Raven; slow for a light, allows in jenners or commandos

Trial centurion; not bad, lets in hunchbacks which are generally considered superior

Trial dragon; a little lacking in punch but workable, lets in vastly superior dragon builds and catapults

Trial awesome; not a bad mech in itself but probably the worst offender since it allows in Atlases, which are pretty much superior in every way.

essentially I think the trial mech choice needs some serious looking at
(or just fix matchmaking ;) )

The problem isn't the mechs it's the matchmaker.

If the matchmaker were skill-based, only new pilots and bad players would be playing each other. As it is you have unskilled (new) pilots fighting skilled players (veterans). It wouldn't matter if the veterans were in the trial mechs - experience would still win (I know, I've run them and have done just fine).

Lin Shai pretty much nailed it. Ideally when the phase of the MM get implemented we will have a system where people will be matched based of both skill and group composition (both mechs weight class and premade vs not). Until then while nothing is finalized playing things out will provide our developer with the tools needed to make sure their MM down the road works as intended.

Allow all mechs to be trial. 1 Atlas or 8 free food is free food.

Pretty much this. I can still do well in a trial mech. Yes, they're terrible, but experience goes a long way. New MM can't get here soon enough.

the trial mechs will alternate on a regular basis (once a week). I am hoping that it will eventually get automated so it will happen without needing a patch.
