Mechwarrior Online should have a feature about starting alliances. Basically it is an Inner Sphere social group for your friends. For example, I am with House Steiner and two of my friends are from House Davion. So I can either ask them to join me or, I could join them.

You can also disband alliances or kick members out if you wanted to. Alliances differ from Merc Corps because with Merc Corps, they are a unit fighting for the Inner Sphere while Alliances are made from members from different houses.

I would say the maxmium amount would be four because it is the equivalent of an Inner Sphere lance, while the minimum would be two. Lone Wolves could get in on the action too if they felt like it.

To add people you would have to click on their names, then you should see an option that says "Add to Alliance",click it and a box will appear and say, "Mr.Man want you to join his alliance, will you join?" as an example. Then you may either say "Yes" or "No". If the player say yes, then it will say the player has joined your alliance.

But while this is happening the host has to be patient because the player has to determine if he wants to join or not.

When in combat, the individual can bring their own mechs in the fight. Then once the game ends, the leader of the alliance shares the planet with the houses of the player faction if they win.

Their are many combinations for alliances like:

2 Davions and 2 Steiners
1 Marik and 1 Liao
1 Kurita, 1 Marik, 1 Davion and 1 Lone Wolf or
1 Kurita, 1 Steiner, and 1 Davion

If their is only two disadvantages to having an alliance, it is shooting other houses allied with you and allied planets being taken over by enemies whether it be another alliance or individual faction.

Not sure whether they'll get that complicated in the system - if you want to play with friends in another house you'd have to join that house. They don't want multiple registrations either.

I will trade you 1 Davion for 2 Liao so I can build a couple jump points.... GO SETTLERS OF BATTLETECH!

If such a system would be implemented... should clan players be able to join into alliances with IS players and vice versa?

Also, that would open the game to much trolling - imagine a davion unit taking with them a single liao player all the time and painting half the inner sphere yellow-green. :)

Well...for the Clans that would be unlikely seeing how much they hate the Inner Sphere.(The Clans need not to make dealings with dishonorable surats.)Vice versa, yes but only with Lone Wolves.

And you can stop the yellow-green alliance as I said before, by defeating them they will lose allied planets to enemies, whether it's by another alliance or an individual faction. So you really don't need an alliance to fight the Davion-Liao units, it's just your choice if you want to or not.

Let's say this, you are from a Kuritan unit, you can "paint" the yellow-green planet over with red, or you can be from the Davion unit that you've mentioned earlier and disband the alliance to backstab the Liao player by fighting and taking the planet from him. It is all about power when it comes to conquest. So their really isn't that much trolling to find.

How far would/should such alliances (though, what's described in the OP are really more "joint operations" than outright alliances) be able to go?

For example, the two main canon inter-House alliances are the Federated Commonwealth (Houses Davion and Steiner) and the Concord of Kapteyn (Houses Kurita, Liao, and Marik).
The FRR (to the best of my knowledge) really doesn't care for the Combine or Mercs, is more-or-less okay with the Lyrans (though, there was that issue with the Duke of Tamar...), and is fairly neutral with everyone else.

In fact, I started a thread on the subject of such alliances (FedCom and ConKap) some time ago... :)

They only last until player the feels like disbanding the alliance.

Their is also a list of unofficial alliances in the computer games:

Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance:
William Dresari had made a deal with House Steiner to rule Kentares IV by murdering the Dresari family.
Mechwarrior 4: Black Knight:
Major Clarissa Dupree made an alliance to Ian Dresari to keep House Steiner neutral by attempting to wipe out the Black Knight Legion.
Mechcommander 2:
Cho(Liao) and Renard(Steiner) made an alliance between Steiner and Liao to conquer Carver V in exchange for killing the mercenaries(you).
