Knight of the Inner Sphere

No doubt, all of you know such a famous and glorious unit - "Knight's of the Inner Sphere", elite of Marik military.
Of course, a lot of people would be pleased to play Knights, but MWO starts at 3048, 7 years before Knights were founded by Thomas Marik. Also, developers said, that players will be able to create their _mercenary_ corporations, while Knighs definately are not merc unit in any sense.

You have House units and Mercenaries.
You have Clans and Cloisters.
Long story short.....KoTS is a unit created by Thomas Marik and operated like a mercenary company more or less.

According interviews, any players' formation will be Mercenary in MWO at this point.
And about KoS - I doubt that military activity of elite FWL unit like Task Force Serpent campaign and FWL-Lyran war, when it obeyed Captain-General's will only, could be described as "operating like a mercenary company more or less".
Also, there was a true mercenary unit, very similar to KoS, and even sometimes mentioned as "foreign" Knights - Romanov's Crusaders.

And I really wish people would stop calling things guilds. This is not WoW :-) The only thing that might be considered a Guild in the B-tech universe is the MRBC (Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission).

Well, term "guild" is widely used in MMOs starting from UltimaOnline. Let's just give MWO community some time to build our own slang
In "Q/A" developers said, that some unit names will be blocked. I made this poll just to show player's opinion, should Knight be blocked too, even if they are formed years after game start date.

Im not down on what you are saying...just stating that the Guild thing annoys me :-)
But this is interesting because how should the KotIS be portrayed here? Should it be only an Elite unit of players by invite only, or will they fill out the ranks the same way they fill out any house unit with random assignments when a player choose to play for the FWL?
I wonder about units like the Rolling Thunder as well.

And who gets to decide who is Elite? Or...that the Leader is Elite enough to make that decision?

I doubt that we'll have an opportunity to play on side of any Great House at all. I guess, it works like any players' unit will be mercenary, not house one. Ofc even mercenaries can have some sort of allegiance to one of Houses, but it's not the same to be a regular military. So, locked unit may not exist in game, just as part of lore.

If there are "elite" house units that the players can join, I think that they will likely have a rank restriction. Like, you can only join if you're a "5-star" player or whatever.

I know the web site is called MWOMERCS.COM, but the name of the game is Mechwarrior Online. Im not convinced that there WONT be house units to join and run. I mean look at the forums. They created a section House Talk with sub forms for each Great House. So why create that if we cannot play and organize as a House? Heck they may not even know themselves which direction to go yet, but Id say they want to have Houses at the very least. In the end this is all speculation till they really tell us anything more about anything they are developing :-)

That's very good legend for create knights-like unit I'd say, but lore-wise only FWL pilots will be able to join Knights itself, other should form Romanov Crusaders In other hand, there are 6 long years before we should start bother about it

Well, I'm pretty sure I've read this thing about mercenary units in Q/A or interview, but I hope it's not yet decided. Only thing differ merc unit from house is only fation member can join house unit, while mercenaries haven't any restrictions. But other question was about timing - should unit nams lasts locked till it's in-universe creation date or not?

It really depends on how these military units are depicted in game. If they aren't even referenced in the game then I would imagine all the regiments would be open for grabs as a guild name. If these units are actually central to the plot or gameplay then it would not be appropriate and would likely just be impossible to make due to filters.
