New Players to the game are hitting substantial learning curve, and I'm sure the game is very frustrating for them.

We've all seen them. They tend to:

1. Rock out the biggest trial mech they can get (Awesome)

2. Charg in solo like John Rambo.

3. Get softened up by the opposing teams LRM focus fire.

4. Firing their own LRMs at point blank range doint no damage.

5. Get mopped up by the opposing team.

End result: Because they are not familiar with the mechanics, the importance of strategy, or how the game works they quick get their ***** kicked--resulting in frustration and they won't stick around.

We were all new once, and as players, we can do a few simple things to improve the community and help insure the growth of our playerbase.

1. Make sure everyone knows about the teamspeak servers! The quality of your experience between pugging solo and joining an 8 man group of peopple you just met is night and day. Even if you lose with your 8 man PUG, you'll still enjoy the socialable atmoshpere and learn common strategies. Not everyone checks the forums, so they don't know about it Team Speak server.

Make an announcment at start of each match" (Copy, Paste, Win!)

"All: Attention new players! Please check the official forums for Team Speak information! 8 man pugs win more games than solo players, and have more fun!"

2. If you see someone not understanding mechanics in the game, (Firing LRMs and PPCs at point blank, etc), they're probably a new player. So take the time after you die, or near the end of match to politely tell them about game mechanics. They may be your enemy this match, but they could be in your squad the next one and you'll want them to know their guns work!

"All: Hey guy in that Trial Awesome, fyi your LRMs do no damage inside 180 meters!"

If you want better matches, you need to help your fellow players get more involved.

EDIT Teamspeak Server info can be found here: http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/ I don't want to list specific ones here because I don't want to show any favoritism. Yes, I use the Comstar US TS server, but there are serveral groups that have posted their TS information up in that thread.

Expecting a large portion of the player base to use out-of-game resources is unrealistic.

I tell them in game what they're doing wrong.

I want to play devil's advocate and say " It's open Beta, so who cares! It's only Beta and no one should take it seriously."
But, we all know this is not true and that the flood gates are open far too soon and the damage may be soon seen.

If there was a need for fresh Beta testers, then sending out more keys was a possibility as I know many others were waiting for their chance to get in and Im sure just announcing Beta tester access would be available. This will wear out those with different expectations. Just saying "It's still in Beta" isn't going to count for much.

On the other hand, maybe we can just develop through this and take what players are sticknig around and help them grow. Once we have an established "ready for Open Beta" system others may start showing up through word of mouth. I feel people seeing this game in it's current state and trends in forum banter may be turned off and not willing to waste their effort later.

No it is not unrealistic, and this might make me sound like an old man... But when i started playing betas back in the days of Otto von Bismark you actually had to put some bleeding effort in. read the documents posted and in the lack of such figure stuff out for your self. So to think that people would take 5-10 minutes out of the packed day and visit a forum that have all the info you need clearly laid out and several areas you can ask questions if something is not clicking. Also the chat window so so hard to see most of the time that it is close to useless any way.

Not saying it is a bad idea to spam things like that over and over in chat... But in the end it falls to the individual user to find the info for them self. We somehow managed to do that for the most part and so will they.

This is expected when I iniitially joined close beta. Those who like the games will look for advise in the forum and other resources to help them. Unfortunately, there are a large group of non-team players who expect everything to be done their way rather than learning to play. You simply can't help. Let them leave.

As a new player (although a MW/BT vet), I have to say that there's a lot that will cause people to flee. The Trial Mechs are a bad system, but that's not something we can control. Matching Trial Mech players against Elite Founders is pretty sad, too.

What we can control is good communication. Politely tell me what I'm doing wrong. Call out the sector you want me in. Explain why, if you have time. I think I'm already in better shape than many newbies, who Lefty Lucy correctly noted will not use out-of-game resources, but I'm still building the skills and learning the game. Even for someone who played a lot of MW, it's 1) been a long time and 2) was mostly single-player in the MW2 days (unless you played NetMech). It takes time to get those skills back and sharp enough for PvP, and anything anyone can do to make it easier to get new players up-to-speed without starting a flame war is really helpful.

Challenge all Trial Mechs to Zellbrigen. Teach them the ropes in honorable one on one combat. Profit

I hate new gamers. Back in the days I played a game called Starsiege tribes and that game required skill. I got my *** handed for months before I got decent.

When I play a single player game I always play on the hardest difficulty because I find hard game much more enjoyable.

Usually when I reach the top of the learning curve the game becomes boring to me.

For sure this game will not get you bored in a short time.

There is a small problem with telling them how to play in game (i.e. telling them LRMs don't work under 180m). This problem is that people tend to take this sort of instruction as critcism and get pissed which in turn makes them leave the game so kind of a catch 22 situation.

Also when your backseat driving, just because you do or would do something different doesn't mean your way is the right way or even better for the person your advising without them asking for your input.

I actually had someone deciding I was a noob and telling me I was messing up because I had my 2 Lg. Lasers set to group fire. (also had them set to link fire on another group for when I needed to slow down my heat generation but he didn't know that). After listening to him telling me I was wrong about this, that and the other thing, I finally stopped playing the game for a minute and typed back, "dude I have over a 1000s matches under my belt, I think I know what I am doing." Whether I am skilled or not can be left up for debate but I DID know what I was doing hehe ;)

Point being, trynig to be helpful can be just as harmful as keeping your mouth shut.

You say that everyone should know about the TS server, but you don't list the server information. I've actually been looking for it too. I had it in closed beta, but can't find where it's listed since I started playing the game again.

Some people just dont like voice chat period.
Its fine, it should be respected.
If the no-voice person is not QQing how mean and unfair it all is because he/she has no voicechat...thats something different. Its just being whiny about a self made problem.
Choosing to be unable to voice chat and being fine with it but still trying to not suicide and help the team is totaly fine.

Its beta. In due time there will be more options to select matches and those who just want to mindless shoot and those who want to win will have the ability to play in diffrent groups.
Untill then just takeing it less serious will help the newbie and the premade guys alot. ;)

Just not putting salt in the wound if you run a newbie group over will help alot too.

My first 10 matches (and losses) didn't find this game to be complex at all. I keep reading this is a 'complex game', some kind of elitist misconception of people who love the whole 'battle mech' idea. It's nowhere nearly as complex as playing on a coordinated Arma2 team. Here you close with the enemy, fire weapons on the enemy and destroy him. Use a little cover and watch your heat level. What is so damn 'complex' about this?

What I AM seeing, is groups of people playing on teamspeak, concentrating fire on people that are causally attempting the game, (In one match, I literally had 5 mechs concentrating LRM fire on just me, yeah that happened by chance) and pretty much suffering no serious damage or loss. This again, is not some kind of 'complex tactic', it's just communications that aren't available to the casual players blundering into this mess.

Yeah, it's a carryover from the Battletech community. It's a simple game that lots of BT players feel is significantly more complex than other games.

Theres two main things that makes this game more complex than arma2:
1) you can face a different direction than you move
2) your arm and torso weapons have seperate reticles
