I believe there is a technical issue here. The way this zoom is implemented means that the scene is rendered twice; once for what is in the zoom window AND once for the scene outside the window.

The FPS hit was found to be too great when the scene in the zoom window was rendered at a decent resolution, so the decision was taken to render it highly pixelated instead. Perhaps they can reverse this and have the zoom part rendered at a better resolution and the wider scene pixelated instead.

I don't expect to see a proper solution for a long time TBH and would rather they just have the module provide a greater zoom multiplier than the standard 3x.

EDIT: Contrary to others assertions, I find it not fit for purpose as most of the time you can barely make out the silhouette of your target, let alone pin point components for precision shots. After all, that is what it is meant to help enable.

EDIT2: What I state above has all been confirmed by the devs BTW.

No this isn't true. Right now its rendered once. And the PIP Zoom is taking a pixel region and 'blowing it up' They said they did *not* want to render the scene twice, to remove the blurriness.

They key problem is - they are not adjusting the depth of field in the CryEngine on zoom.

http://freesdk.cryde...Setup+and+Usage

They leave this setting fixed, and thus all objects in the distance are post-process blurred. If they would shift the focus distance out in the scene during a zoom it would look much clearer, and stay single-pass.

It's still useful in its broken state. I just use thermals a lot more due to the ease of distinguishing mech from background.

Nowt to do with snide me old sausage, just a recognition that describing as a rip-off something that;

* doesn't cost real life money, and,
* comes naturally with time spent playing a game that you only play for the fun of playing anyway, and
* is already due to be fixed during this beta phase, and,
* still works despite not being quite as pretty as a bunny girl...

..is as overblown and hyperbolic as calling people with whom you disagree fuckwits over the internet.
That's all, chill mate. :P

Your backward and condescending cockney attitude doesn't mask your overt and obnoxious hubris when you make value judgements about somebody else's own personal time. Snide is the only way to describe the initial responses. At least by those who have yet to be so completely consumed by their own board-warrior E-go.
Maybe to the kneck-beards who play 10hours a day it may not seem much, but not so many are "fortunate" enough to afford that sort of time and I personally wouldn't dismiss their grievances so quickly.

Couldn't find it among known issues in Command Chair section, can you give me a direction where I should dig deeper or who told it's a known issue. Cause I've just bought it, hoping to see ye oldie nice picture in picture zoom from MW3 and then...

Re buying all your CDs on minidisk in the early 90's, a rip off.

A F2P computer game, where you spend pretend money on pretend stompy mechs, for a zoom module that upscales the image by 4x is a lot of things; A workaround for low end PCs, a place holder maybe, some might even say an inelegant solution, but let's be honest - A rip off it ain't.

You can buy a gallon of bottled water for 88 cents.

The current PiP solution indeed goes for the frame buffer, I think. CryENGINE doesn't support multiple viewports afaik, they'd have to render the scene twice. Which would... err, kind of halve the frame rate...

... Anyone see the reason why they don't want to re-render the scene? :D

I expect they'll continue looking for better solutions to the problem but for now it does what it says. More or less.

How about replacing the PiP zoom with a scoop that drops down over your eyes, kind of like the targeting computer on a X-wing? You'll get a nice fully render zoom but at the cost of losing sight of every thing else.

This was is an old issue that was raised in close beta forums to death.
Personally i think it looks good, after all its a digital zoom (or i seem to remember reading that somewhere). I dont want a perfect crystal clear image that enables me to head shot some mech with a AC or Guass round. making it abit grainy adds to the effect. Remember this is IS tech not Clan tech. Its meant to be rubbish, old and breakdown. And before all the old posters from the old threads on this start but we have better technology today - get over it its a game.

i agree and have no problem with it. i use it all the time

They should have left in the original 3x zoom instead of the current 2.5 zoom until this issue is fixed.

If you have the engine controls to take advantage of the extra octane rating in expensive fuel, it's actually a pretty good deal compared to the cost of getting power out of your engine in other ways...I had a selectable 100-octane tune on my Subaru and the spendy gas was worth every penny B)

I would not drink tap water in certain places, and some places you should at lest boil / filter it.

Why don't you try not paying your water bill and seeing how free it is then?

Anyways, the devs did say in the old Beta forums that this was a temporary thing, and they were working on a fix. Haven't found any documentation about it in the "new and improved" forums though.

LOL what I don't get is why people buy bottled water that's just tap water that's been boiled ;) (Distilled water) I can *almost* understand buying bottled spring-water... but buying distilled water is silly. Not only can you get the exact same effect by just boiling your own tap water for 1 minute drinking distilled water is actually bad for you long term if you don't drink anything else as it can leach nutrients and trace elements from your system over time since it's acidic. It's great periodically and for purges though and also good if you're in a country or area where water quality is a big concern. (lots of medical studies on this, actually).

Boy have we gone off topic :)

Don't even try to say that nonsense, you spend your TIME, the most valuable thing, on getting it.So it is a massive rip-off.
