New Players:

First of all, welcome, I think you will enjoy your time here.

I wanted to put out a warning that some veteran players fear you and will tell you that you can change views by using ALT F3-F5. They will tell you that this is how you get the "Cool new 3rd person view". Do not listen to them, there is no 3rd person view. Alt F4 will exit you from the match. Refer to the control guides provided and you can avoid these kinds of traps.

I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield.
Good luck and happy hunting.

P.S. I think they do this because they fear you...and with good reason.

I've also seen people telling new players that they can get a buff by pressing 'P'. This is not true, of course - 'P' is used to power up/power down your mech.

Veterans who take advantage of newbies in this fashion disgust me, nevermind getting themselves targeted by me.

I thought Alt-F4 was the Eject button.

In a way it is the eject button just not in the traditional sense of the word. I have seen this happen only once but fortunatly there was a senior founder presant in the match who quickly pointed out what Alt-f4 would do and also pointed out that people had been banned for trying to trick others into doing it. It is after all a pretty low trick to pull on someone, especially when the idea of open beta is to pull in as much interest in the game as possible.

Still, it happens a lot. I said it once to be funny... someone mid-match asked how to fire AMS. I said, "Hit Alt-F4" as a joke, assuming I'd get some laughs. I was shocked when the message "[REDACTED] disconnected" flashed onscreen a few seconds later. I felt so bad - I assumed he'd know better (it's basic computer stuff, like CTRL-ALT-DEL) and only meant to be funny, and instead wound up being the douche that pranked him out of the match!

I shall never underestimate the naivete of F2P gamers again. My conscience can't afford it.

The Alt+F4 joke has been around for what? Twenty years? If people are still falling for that, it's their own fault.

On a separate note, MWO is full of trolls. Considering a lot of players are EVE veterans, it's makes sense. New players should be taking all advice in matches with a grain of salt.

You got to realize what day and age this is. We live in a world of consoles that don't have an Alt-F4. People go get these computers and don't know much about them. I know cause I'm an IT person that has to repair computers on a regular basis.

It's just not polite to tease the new people.

First saw that tactic used in TFC. I'm sure it was used long before that. But TFC was my first online multiplayer game. It's an old, old joke. Like the pool on the roof of the highschool you could sell keys to...

Computing 101 or not, this shouldn't be happening. Martin has the right understanding of it. :D

On one hand... the garden-variety internet troll who thinks this is funny should have his gaming rig fed through a wood chipper one card at a time.

On the other, though... if you can't be arsed to actually read the documentation for your game (things like control maps, patch notes, and other basics), well, then you deserve to get trolled.

"First world problems".

You can not save the world from idiots, only hope the idiots die off first. While this is a possibly cruel joke in some peoples eyes it is a joke they only need to learn one time, may be then they will go read the game manual and be all the wiser to your willy ways.

Ugh. The jerkoffs who do that need to get beat with a sturdy 2x4 until candy comes out, and then permanently exiled to Call of Duty without the ability to block the 12 year olds on VOIP...

I could hardly believe my chat buffer the first time I saw someone actually try to pull that crap in MWO. Even back in my days of fighting on Solaris 7 over fifteen years ago that crap was so old it was the kind of thing everyone rolled their eyes at.

Of course...between that and the fact that it's basic computing knowledge, it makes me want to smack the ever-loving hell out of anyone who falls for it, too. (Part of my 'Equal-Opportunity Educational Program')

I have to admit though, it was real cute. Some real :effort: on the jerkoff's part. "Man, this third-person camera is great." "Third person camera?!" "Yeah, they added different cameras last patch, use F3-F5 to choose." The jerkoff was on my team, too! I swear, if anyone'd fallen for it, I would have TK'd him on general principle.

Sometimes, new players just don't know so they ask. I'm very new to MWO (~2 weeks). I didn't know what ALT+F4 would do, and if someone in game told me to do it, i probably would have done so, especially if I asked a "How do I do . . ." type of question. Veteran players shouldn't be douches or elitists. Help people, because whoever you help will more likely "pay it forward", thus making a better community overall.

With that said, so far people in game have been great to me and I appreciate it.

Lol.. come on really? It will happen ONCE, and then those people will realize what alt+f4 does and not do it again.

This joke isn't an MWO elitist joke. It happens in every game, because it's not a game specific command, it's a windows platform command.

It's really kind of funny to see people calling those who use this troll jerks and then watch them display their ignorance about the system level of the command itself.

Funny, most of these posts point out that it's basic computer knowledge.

Look, people who exploit the ignorance of others are scumbags. The ignorant are equally culpable for not knowing basic computing, but that's the point; they don't know any better. The scumbags, on the other hand, are actively making a choice to screw with people. Sure, it might be funny to troll the FNGs or watch someone else do it, but it's still the behavior of a jerkoff and yeah, the internet really needs more of that.

I don't know how you can try and sell people on any other point of view. But hey, maybe I'm just in the minority here, having outgrown that kind of behavior nearly two decades ago.

For thousands of years, and since before the internet people have "hazed the new guy". I guess you never watched movie about immigrants in high school.

Irish kid goes to new york school every day, and eats a potato for lunch. The kids give him a banana and laugh as he's eating it with the skin still on it.

The behavior is human behavior. It is an extension into the internet, and suddenly anyone who does it or has done it is a scumbag?

1. Its a game. Not life or death.
2. It only works once.
3. I prefer considering mechanics who lie to you to keep getting your money, insurance salesmen, lawyers, and politicians more scummy. They're playing with people's lives for their own gain.

But sure, let's use the psychological defense of displacement to revile the harmless, if irritating, trollers online, instead of accept our feelings as possibly dangerous because they're telling us how we feel about the real scumbags of the world.

Everyone needs a scapegoat so they can feel better about accepting being **** on by others. People who do that are pitiable.
