This is correct. As a long-time CJF warrior, I always cringe when someone calls a mech I like by the IS reporting name.
Then again, I cringe when they use contractions if I am in character, also.

They probably will "fast forward" time when nothing interesting happens in the BT timeline, but designs like Mad Cat MkII or Fafnir are way, way in the future regardless. You can check sarna for production dates on your favorite mechs.
Edit:

there are over 100 battletech books, check amazon or wikipedia or ebay or whatever. if you start at the beginning you'll be about 40 years before where we are now in this game, and at the end they're about 100 years past where we are now

Here is the very basic run-down from how I understand it...
- When the star systems around Earth were colonized (inner sphere), they were ruled and protected by the Star League.
- soon factions arose in the the inner sphere and house governments started taking shape (Draconis Combine, Federated Suns, etc...)
- They started developing their own battle mechs to assert their dominance, but they were much weaker and less capable than the Star League mechs.
- The houses of the inner sphere started to undermine the Star Leagues influence and try to obtain Star League technology
- General Kerensky, being appalled by this (and the bloody house wars), began an exodus from the Inner sphere (from which 40% or so of the Star League left the Inner Sphere for the Periphery). He was afraid the house governments of the Inner Sphere would destroy the Star League and leave human kind vulnerable and weak. Kerensky's plan was to return when the Inner Sphere imploded and restore order.
- After the Star League retreated, the Inner Sphere continued to war with itself (Succession Wars) and the remanents of the Star League became Comstar (religious zealots that controlled Earth and the close surrounding systems) along with the communications network for the Inner Sphere.
- The Star League that left with Kerensky colonized 5 worlds in the Periphery. They soon also started fighting each other as well.
- After General Kerensky died, one of his descendants united the Star League by creating the Clans. (I think about a 100 years or so after Exodus).
- Clans continued to develop tech while the Inner Sphere burned in war.
- It was decided that the Clans would return to the Inner Sphere, but there was a dispute on the role of the Clans in their return. Clans like Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar wanted to be conquerors imposing their will and ways on the Inner Sphere, while Clan Wolf wanted to be more passive in their role as mostly Guardians (but still rulers).
- Clans invade the Inner Sphere and the first Clan to Earth absorbs all other Clans and gets to rule man kind.
Clan Mechs were better because they had a Long time to advance while most advancements in the Inner Sphere were lost to war. Inner Sphere mechs are generally worse still than the Star League mechs, and WAY worse than the new Clan Mechs.
Again, brief overview with probably some errors. Should give you an idea if you didn't go to sarna.net
More knowledgeable people might be able to elaborate more or correct me if I am wrong.
